Charlie Cox has recently reacted to his The Game Awards Best Performance nomination for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's Gustave, noting that he's “thrilled” but that motion capture actor Maxence Cazorla deserves just as much credit.
From the moment Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launched at the very beginning of the year, it was clear to almost all of us that it would end up as the clear front runner at The Game Awards and pretty much every awards show. Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened, with Clair receiving tons of nominations across the board, including a whopping three spots in the Best Performance category.
One of the three Best Performance nominations has, unsurprisingly, gone to Charlie Cox, who voices the game's first protagonist Gustave. Despite only recording lines for about four hours, Cox's performance as Gustave captured all of our hearts and has stuck with everyone throughout the year, leading to a nomination that Cox is “delighted” to receive, although he thinks another actor deserves just as much credit.
Charlie Cox says that Gustave's Motion Capture actor, Maxence Cazorla, is what made the character so special
“My voice is just part of that process”
As pointed out by Twitter user bursinxmurdock, Charlie Cox recently reacted to his Best Performance nomination while speaking on a panel. Cox said he is “delighted” for the nomination, but almost immediately passed the credit on to Gustave's motion capture actor, Maxence Cazorla, who not only provided Gustave's movement, but also did the same for Renoir and Verso.
Clair Obscur's Jennifer English is right, Queer Joy is worth pursuing no matter the cost
After winning Best Performance at this year's Golden Joysticks, Jennifer English touched on the importance of queer joy in her life.
If that wasn't enough for you, Cazorla is also the voice of Esquie, Expedition 33's standout character. Cox deserves as much love as he gets, but he might have a point.
Cox said that any nomination or credit he receives for Gustave, he feels he has to give to Cazorla, as he believes “the performance of that character really depends on him”, and that his voice is “just part of that process”. It's a very nice gesture, and one that isn't too surprising given that Cox has previously said he felt like a “total fraud” for the amount of praise he's received for Clair Obscur.
There's a great French actor, named Maxence Cazorla, who did almost all the motion capture for that role in that game. Any nomination or credit I get, I really have to give to him – I think that character's performance is really down to him, and my voice is just part of that process. – Charlie Cox
While Cox is definitely right that Cazorla deserves a lot more credit for how much life he's brought to several of Clair Obscur's central characters, I think most of us would agree that he should give himself a lot more love as well. Cox's voice may only be “part of that process,” but it's a very important part.
