Although Borderland's 4 were just released 15 days ago, it has not prevented the gearbox's software from revealing its first of two planned new arch hunters for the recently released looter shooter. During a panel at this year's Tokyo Game Show, Randy Pitchford and Co. C4SH revealed the first vault hunter to be launched in early 2026, together with a new story content.
C4SH is described as a former dealer bot at a casino that has quit their day job to become a vault hunter after seeing players get their wealth done well or bad through turn. It sounds a lot like FL4K's back story about finding free will, although it is unclear if there is any relationship.
As described by Pitchford himself, C4SH “uses its understanding of chance and probability to make the results random.” Specifically, he will have access to playing cards and dice and is based around luck – to be powerful with happiness or weak by bad luck.
In addition to having a backstory similar to FL4K from Borderland's 3, it sounds like C4SH will take lots of inspiration from Pitchford's real exploits. Under the panel, Pitchford explained his love for poker, short performance and tricks, and how he was actually used by animators for C4SH's own Sleight by Hand Tricks.
C4SH will be accompanied by Story DLC
The package that C4SH is scheduled to arrive will debut sometime during the first quarter of 2026, which means at any time between January and March. Per Borderland's 4 Roadmap, Main Story Mission, a new place, new side assignments, new legendary weapons and new cosmetics will help find out what is called “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned.”
According to the gearbox, the expansion is described as follows:
The first story package will be a bloody, cosmic-horror-inspired story entitled Mad Ellie and The Vault of the Damned. As you may have guessed, it plays one-and-only Ellie, Pandoran Mechanic Extraordinaire and daughter of Moxxi.
That's all we can say about storytelling right now, but you can look forward to seeing new ones and Returning characters in each story package. In other words, expect to see a familiar face or two in the second story. At the moment you must keep up to date for more information.
Pitchford comparisons aside, C4SH sounds like the closest we have to play as Gambit from the X-Men series, or for those who love anime, dragon from Hunter X Hunter.
