At the end, he was about to take her Devil Fruit until Rayleigh showed up and scared him off the island. Yet even Rayleigh admitted that he wasn't sure if he could actually have defeated Blackbeard.

The fight took place off-screen for the most part, but it really speaks to Blackbeard's insane strength and intellect, as he managed to defeat a formidable fighter who possessed an incredible Devil Fruit as well as the ability to use Conqueror's Haki. By defeating Ace, Blackbeard handed him over to become a Warlord of the Sea, which was also how he was eventually able to take full advantage of the Marineford War to claim the Gura Gura no Mi.

In his first time with Gura Gura no Mi, Whitebeard almost succeeded in flipping Marineford as Whitebeard did, showing everyone that there was a new contender for the position of Yonko.
