In an extremely fascinating and almost outrageous turn of events, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the much-maligned first-person shooter that makes up this year's annual Call of Duty entry, is on sale.
Not just any sale, but a whopping 50 percent off across all its platforms (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One) just one month — Black Ops 7 officially launched on November 14 — after launch.
Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 just proved that the bigger you are, the harder you'll fall
Activision has admitted that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 failed, and it won't make the same mistake again.
Also, it's not just a retailer either. Black Ops 7 is on sale at GameStop, Best Buy and Target, as well as Amazon. It's not for sale digitally, although most digital storefronts haven't had their weekly update yet.
I haven't decided if I'm going to start buying Black Ops 7, but if I were I'd probably pick up the game at Best Buy since it seems that at least for now you'll get the limited edition steel book with your purchase. Not bad.
It is not uncommon for games to be sold after launch. It happens all the time, and especially now with the holiday season in full swing. That said, it's not nearly as common to see a game that was literally just released to get such a big discount.
I can't be alone in remembering that whatever annual Call of Duty title was out also doubled as the ultimate Christmas present, and whether you bought the game at launch or waited until Christmas itself, there was almost never a discount. If there was, it wasn't big.
No, Black Ops 7 is about breaking the rules.
Black Ops 7 has had a rough launch, and that might be being generous
When Black Ops 7 launched a month ago, it immediately saw its status on Steam tank to “Mixed” and later “Mostly Negative,” with many taking issue with its unrealistic campaign and blatant use of AI.
Things only snowballed from there, as Black Ops 7 outside of Steam became the worst user-reviewed title in series history. With the number of players, especially as the campaign free-falled, Activision and Co. bribe Zombies players. At the same time, the requirement to have to beat the campaign to access the extraction shooter mode was also removed shortly after launch.
For Season 1, Black Ops 7 came out with a large number of maps and modes, plus a skin that was historically only available for purchase. Unfortunately, it did not do much to increase the number of players.
Recently, Activision outlined that it would no longer be making back-to-back editions of its Modern Warfare or Black Ops series while seemingly apologizing for the dire state things are in right now. Somehow, the game was the most downloaded title on PlayStation in November, creating a belief that things couldn't be as bad as they seemed.
Flash forward to today, and it seems the next logical step is to deeply discount the game and hope enough people buy it to not only increase sales and player numbers, but also help bring back some goodwill. We'll see if it works out.
