While the past few years have been particularly rough for the trans and gender-fluid communities, there’s been a rise in trans and gender-fluid media, and media on the nature of gender as a whole. It also coincides with a rise in Korean media, particularly their manhwa comics, as they’re now more readily available than ever thanks to Webtoons, Tapas, and other websites. Whether they’re deep, introspective stories about gender or simple, lighthearted tales about the subject, there’s something for everyone.

It’s pretty much as basic as a gender-bender story can get, and Girl Reborn uses it right from the beginning, as Eunsung recovers from a Truck-kun encounter that turned him into a girl. Eunsung isn’t exactly thrilled at this change and does his best to hide it so he can live as ordinarily as he can. For the most part, it works out for him, as his friends and family are left none the wiser.

But then his secret gets discovered by the one person he wanted to keep his new status hidden from most of all: his high school crush. All on his first day as a woman, too. However, instead of being repulsed, embarrassed, or weirded out, she seems intrigued. In fact, she’s so intrigued she wants Eunsung to be her new life model for her artwork, clothed or otherwise. However long it lasts, Eunsung’s time as a girl is going to be stranger than he thought.

So, when he wakes up after one late-night gaming session in the form of a pretty young girl (or ‘bagel’ in Korean), he’s understandably confused. He seeks help online and finds it in Han Sae-Mi.

She advises him on what to do as a woman, from maintaining his looks to watching out for getting the wrong kind of attention. But Bong-Gi seeks to use his new ‘gifts’ for revenge on everyone who looked down on him. Particularly Han Sang-Woo, an old friend who left him behind when he needed him most. Though as time goes on, he learns more about the supernatural phenomena that changed him — and how he can use it for more constructive means than petty revenge.

Most of the stories on this list stray across gender lines through less drastic measures like dress and mannerisms. It fits the bill, though some readers might prefer something stronger, like a full transition. Which is what happens in The Lady I Served Became a Master. It sees Sua getting isekai’d into her favorite novel as Blair, the maid to Chloe, the illegitimate daughter of a noble family and Sua’s favorite character in the book.

As Blair, Sua stands by Chloe’s side throughout her darkest moments, where the two form a special bond. One that gets too special, as Chloe loses interest in her male suitors in favor of black magic. It all culminates in one day when Sua comes across a man called Claude who heavily resembles Chloe. What seems obvious to others forms a comedy of errors as Sua slowly realizes Claude used to be Chloe and wants to take their friendship to the next level.

The Lady I Served Became a Master might stick in some people’s craw, as it essentially turns a potential lesbian pairing into a straight one. So, what if the tables were turned? It Wasn’t There, But Now It Is sees Hong Ryu fall for Dowon Yoon, the most handsome boy in school. Though she’s something of a wallflower, she manages to confess her feelings for him, only to be turned down because Dowon is gay.

She thinks all hope is lost until a mysterious woman gives her a way to become Dowon’s ideal partner through some magic pills. If she takes them regularly, she’ll become Dowon’s dream man. It works surprisingly well, as she becomes more dynamic, confident, and in control as Dowon falls for them. But the meds only last for so long per dose. What will happen if she runs out? And who was that mystery woman? Readers will have to seek it out to find out.

Prince Cinderella

Instead of using alchemy or magic medicine, Prince Cinderella sees its lead change sex naturally, albeit inexplicably. Darim just changes into a man every day at noon, then switches back to a woman at midnight. It’s made her social life a little tricky, as she’s one of the most popular kids in high school. She owes this to Taehoo, her middle school friend, who helped her come out of her shell. He was the ‘Prince Charming’ to her ‘Cinderella’.

However, once they entered high school, they started drifting apart until he didn’t seem to care about her anymore. Her attempts to close the gap as a woman often failed due to her nerves, or fate making things worse for the two. However, if she can’t get close to him as a girl, maybe she could fix the rift as a guy. The result is a quirky comedy of errors as Darim tries to regain her ‘Prince Charming’.

His Majesty’s Secret Heroine

Lok Heun’s life takes a tragic turn when her mother is murdered, and her father is made into a fugitive after exacting revenge. To help clear his name, she places herself in the care of Emperor Garyun, who aims to atone for the reign of his more brutal father. But he’s prone to mistakes, as he thinks Lok Heun is a boy. As such, he does all he can to help her become the ultimate fighter. Or as the English title says, His Majesty’s Secret Heroine.

He goes as far as sending her to hell to fight demons. Needless to say, this strains their relationship a bit. But tensions ease as Garyun gives Lok Heun the one thing she lost: a shot at a happy life once again. The manhwa did get an official English translation via Tapas. However, it suffers from typos, mistranslations, and other mistakes, leading keener readers to go back to its unofficial but more accurate fan translations.

Not to be confused with the supernatural werewolf comedy strip of the same name on Webtoon, After Midnight sees its protagonist transform into a different kind of hairy monster: an ordinary man. By day, Jina is an ordinary young woman who works at a law firm. But she suffers from a condition where she turns into a man at the stroke of midnight. It’s a condition she inherited from her late father, who transformed into a woman around the same time.

Usually, she’s back at home by the time the change takes place, where she changes back at sunrise. Until one day, when her new job sees her working overtime. Through an unfortunate chain of events, she ends up changing in front of her boss, Seung Hyun-Kang. He plays nice in front of the cameras but is a notorious homophobe and womanizer when he’s off-camera. With Jina and her condition under his wing, she’s bound to either get a pink slip or show him the error of his ways.

After those magical stories, Click takes things in a more scientific direction, albeit still rather fantastical. For the first 16 years of his life, Joonha was an ordinary if arrogant boy who went through life with few problems, but then he fainted in shock when he lost a certain part of himself. It’s only when he wakes up that he discovers the truth about his family – they have a genetic mutation where they switch sexes following puberty.

His father was actually born a woman and became a man, and now Joonha will go the opposite direction and become a girl. So, after years of bullying girls, he’s got to eat crow as he adjusts to his new life. It’s funny enough, as Joonha’s sexism gets turned on its head. But not everyone clicked with his path to becoming a better person, most notably Yuricon founder Erica Friedman via her Okazu blog (“I will never understand straight women’s attraction to men who are loathsome”).

Queen’s

Readers will have to keep a sharp eye, as Ha Sung-Hyun also created the similarly-named historical time-traveling romance Queen’s Man. It’s good, but not a gender-bending story like their earlier work, Queen’s. Briefly published in the West in 2004 by Tokyopop, it’s about Pil-Hyun ‘Teddy Boy’ Jung, a pretty boy who likes to make teddy bears in his spare time.

But when his crush opts for his more masculine classmate Gyung-Ju, Pil-Hyun tries to shed his delicate nature by asking the manhwa artist Bok-Nam for help. They made their name with their strip ‘How to Escape Being a Pretty Boy’, so surely they and their friends can help. But they have their own plans. As a result, Pil-Hyun goes on a journey of laughs and tears as he learns to accept himself for who he is.

Normal City

Normal City might be a hard one to track down, as it’s a fairly old strip that ran from 1993 to 2001. It’s set in the far future where humanity has managed to spread to other planets, and they’ve begun to accept people with extra-sensory powers, or ESPs, in society. Kind of. They’re largely used as military tools. One in particular, Kitty 101, was genetically engineered with the ability to shift from male to female among other abilities.

But one of the scientists, Jason Haven, didn’t want her to be turned into a weapon of war. He stole her away and raised her as his child in place of his late daughter. Jason tries to give her a normal upbringing, complete with a new identity as Mars Haven. But with her abilities, and with other ESPs under experimentation, it’s unlikely things will remain normal for Mars.

Another World Dump Truck‘s premise is a little hard to parse thanks to a dodgy translation of its synopsis, but it’s basically a cross between an isekai, a reincarnation tale, and a bodyswap gone wrong story. First, it sounds normal for these kinds of stories, as Kwon Yoo-Jun gets hit by a truck and reincarnates as a villainess in a romance fantasy novel. But this turns out to be a mistake, as Yul, the manager of the interdimensional dump truck office, sent Truck-kun after the wrong person.

She enters the novel to try and make amends, only to find Yoo-Jun is really getting into the role of a spoiled noblewoman in a fantasy land. To make things worse, Kwon’s body in the real world only turned out to be mostly dead and is now being controlled by the original villainess. Separated from her coworkers, Yul has to find a way to make things right by herself.

My Boyfriend Is A Vampire

Not to be confused with the Eva Knight book or the short story in Miyake Madoka’s Pet Wa Binyanshi, My Boyfriend is a Vampire somehow manages to make the “vampire” part of the title the least surprising thing about it. It follows Da-In Yoo, the ringleader of a gang of hoodlums at his all-boys school. He’s pretty enough to look like a girl, but if he hears anyone say so, he and his friends will beat them to a pulp.

But things take a funny turn when he spots something strange going on in the nearby forest. He goes to investigate and ends up getting bitten by a vampire. Da-In is sure they killed him, yet he was able to wake up and recover. He soon learns he’s been turned into one of the undead, and into a girl at the same time. Left with no choice, he delves deeper into the world of vampires to find out what happened to him, why he became a girl, and what became of the handsome vampire that turned him.

My Girlfriend Is A Real Man

This manhwa doesn’t waste time getting started on its premise. Yoonjae is called over to a café by his girlfriend Jieun, only to discover she’s turned into a man. Yoonjae doesn’t believe “him” at first, calling her on his phone, only for the male Jieun to pick up his phone in front of him and answer back. Yoonjae is eventually convinced, though he’s in as much disbelief as Jieun.

Jieun doesn’t know how he became male either. He just woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and saw a handsome man looking back instead of a pretty girl. As they try to figure out how Jieun changed, the two go through a range of misunderstandings and mishaps. Yet their relationship persists as, despite Jieun’s new masculine exterior, he’s still the sweetheart Yoonjae fell in love with. Compared to that, the matter of gender seems superfluous.

I Quit the Heroes’ Party

It’s not as common as isekai stories, reincarnation tales, or yarns about villainesses, but the fantasy genre has had plenty of stories about people getting kicked out of their adventuring party to either get revenge or make a new life. I Quit the Heroes’ Party follows along those lines, though it’d be more accurate to say its protagonist was fired. Raniel the Ashen Wizard was a key member of the Heroes’ Party, helping them defeat the Demon King, but his selfishness got him hit with a curse that reduced his lifespan by half.

Unable and unwilling to help him, the party kicks Raniel to the curb. Then Raniel discovers another side to the curse when, after beating a monster on his own, he’s transformed into a girl. To undo this and regain her lifespan, she takes on the name Rania and becomes the Assistant Professor at the Royal Apelia Academy to check its library and pick the brains of its staff. Until she figures it out, she’s also got to teach classes, which is a whole different challenge from battling monsters.

In the dog-eat-dog world of Hwarin: The Flaming Scales, Yu Hwarin was on top of the world. He was known and feared throughout the realm as the leader of the Black Sky sect. But that just meant there were people waiting in the wings to take his place by one means or another, and his closest disciple took it by leaving him for dead. To avoid dying, Hwarin gets transported to another world, where they end up in a new, female body.

Woman or not, Hwarin isn’t keen on letting their disciple get away with betrayal. She aims to return to her old world and take back leadership of the Black Sky sect one step at a time. All they have at their side to help them is a little magic — and a dragon sidekick who isn’t afraid to run his mouth. But that might be all they need to pull off their plan.

Secret Alliance takes things in a more horror-orientated direction. Eun ‘Shanshan’ Sian suffered a traumatic experience with an ex-boyfriend, developing a fear of men in the process. She gets sent to an all-girls school to avoid inflaming her fears, where she becomes popular. However, she feels suffocated by her overbearing mother, and she doesn’t care for the other girls’ attention. Scared as she is, she’s still into guys.

Unfortunately, she catches the attention of Yuri, the prettiest girl in school, who won’t take no for an answer. She becomes the yandere from hell, stalking Eun after school and at work. Her only help comes from Hyun, the boss at her part-time job. He starts stuck up but eventually warms to Eun’s plight. It’s a twisted psychological horror that requires a strong stomach but rewards the reader with a sweet ending.

Athena Complex

There are a lot of stories that are either inspired by Greek mythology or use its figures in a variety of different ways, whether they’re canonical to the original myths or not. Athena Complex takes some liberties as it turns Athena and Poseidon, deities of wisdom and the sea, respectively, from family members into an unrelated, would-be couple. Athena tried to woo Poseidon, only to be spurned by him. Left heartbroken, she now seeks revenge on the ocean god.

Poseidon would later be reincarnated in the form of Adrian, an ordinary high school boy who knows zilch about the gods. Seeing an opportunity, Athena takes on a male form herself in order to join Adrian’s school and befriend him in the hopes of leading him astray. But things get complicated for her as the days go by, as the other Greek gods pop up to make their presence known, and she still finds herself smitten with the former ocean god. Maybe she’ll have better luck with him as a mortal man than as a goddess.

Mookhyang: Dark Lady

Mookhyang: Dark Lady is a little different from the other entries here, as it’s an adaptation of a novel. Partially. The original Mookhyang novels by Dong-jo Jeon are big sellers in Korea, detailing the adventures of the titular character, the hierarch of the Demonic Sect. He rises through the ranks, seeking what it means to become stronger and master Chinese kung fu while taking on a range of old masters and evil forces.

Dark Lady adapts the novel’s second arc, where Mookhyang is cursed by his rivals in the Blood Sect. They send him to another realm full of Western fantasy figures like elves, wizards, and knights. He tries to overcome the curse with his manipulation of mana, only to end up cursed again and turned into a woman. Now the martial arts master/mistress has to overcome two curses while adjusting to how things are for the fairer sex for a while.

For such a simple title, Change (a Chinese manhua rather than a Korean manhwa) has a dramatic start. Da Wei and He Jun dreamed of working together to become the strongest in the country. That is, until He Jun had to go abroad to study, leaving Da Wei to head to high school alone. He passes on his ring and title of ‘Qingfeng’s Big Boss’ to his friend before leaving. Putting it on, Da Wei promises to use his strength to reach He Jun wherever he goes.

Then he gets struck by lightning the moment he raises his ring-clad fist in the air. He wakes up later in the hospital to find he’s lost his buff, muscular body, and a lot more. The lightning turned him into a dainty, cute girl. It’s played for yucks, but his search for another way to gain fame and He Jun’s attention is no laughing matter, as it takes a different kind of strength to make it as a woman in the world.

Pumpkin Time

Some readers might be more familiar with Pumpkin Time‘s 2021 K-drama adaptation, but the manhwa can now be found online too. As kids, Tae-Joo and Hae-Won were the best of friends, spending nearly all their time together watching and playing baseball. They thought they’d be friends for life until Tae-Joo learned his family was moving to America. Forced to separate, he tells Hae-Won he will find him again and grows up hoping to reunite with his friend.

Years later, Tae-Joo gets sent back to Korea, where he immediately sets out to track down Hae-Won. But he gets a surprise when the trail leads him to Hae-Yoon instead. While Tae-Joo was in the US, his friend went through a magical change that turned him into a girl. Unable to go back, she lived her life as a high school girl. Can their friendship survive the change, or will it change just as suddenly?
