Best early game weapons in Avowed

If players look for them, they can find many killer weapons in the early hours of Avowed. They come in all shapes and sizes and most don't require players to reach any sort of statistical benchmarks. It can be one of the more annoying parts of an RPG, finding great loot that can't be equipped due to stat or level requirements.

Avowed Guide Hub – All walkthroughs, upgrades, gear and collectibles

Our complete collection of guides and walkthroughs for Obsidian Entertainment's fantasy RPG, Avowed.

That is not the case in Avowed with a small caveat in the following example. Most of the better weapons are tied to side missions but then there are others just lying around waiting. Let's go over where players can find these mythical wonders.

Updated February 20, 2026 by Marc Santos: Awowed's 2.0 update introduced Quarterstaves, a two-handed weapon category that serves as a melee weapon for mages. While they don't grant spells or provide the same benefits as Grimoires, they serve as reliable tools to step on when players need to get into a fight. Of course, the update also brought Unique Quarterstaff variants, and luckily one of them can be obtained very early in the game.

For weapons given as Bounty rewards, see the Bounty Board in Paradise for their exact locations.

Caeroc's Pride (handgun)

Catching Lightning In A Gun

Caeroc's Pride weapon in Avowed

  • Location: Ondra's Reach

  • Quest: Tempestuous Luandi (Bounty)

Caeroc's Pride is a gun imbued with lightning-based elemental magic. This can be used to prop up gates opened by devices or when used in water, anyone who steps into the affected water will be electrocuted. Pistols and muskets in this game usually have to be reloaded after each shot so players don't jump into Avowed and try to play it as an RPG shooter similar to Fate. Players must find and defeat the reward for Tempestuous Luandi who lives east of Paradis in Ondra's Reachand they only need to loot his carcass after.

Drawn in Winter (hand axe)

Ice, ice, skeleton baby

Draw in Winter weapons in Avowed

  • Location: Watcher's Mirror

  • Mission: Ancient Memory

Drawn in Winter is a one-handed ax imbued with ice magic players can get into early Avowed. It can freeze enemies on repeated hits or it can even freeze small areas of water. Players must march to the east side of the map to the Watcher's Mirror.

Avowed Races Human Elf Race King Queen Aedyrian Empire Intro Cinematic Emperor

All playable races in Avowed

In Avowed, playable races are not that different from each other in terms of gameplay – but there aren't many options for races in Avowed.

They must look at the Ancient Relic, answer a few questions, and then a pillar will rise out of the nearby lake with the ax stuck inside. After grabbing the ax, skeletons will come out but players can relax. They're pretty easy and there's no Bone Mama to worry about.

Last Light of the Day (Sword)

Burn the sky

Last weapon of the day in Avowed

  • Location: Temple of Eothas

  • Mission: Dawntreader

Avowed players can get the last light of the day early and it's a one-handed sword with the power of fire inside it. It can be used to burn victims or burn through obstacles such as spider webs. It's a good sword to use with a shield, a typical combo in an RPG. Players must first go to the northern area labeled Pilgrim's Path where they can take on the Dawntreader side quest. It's a long quest filled with rewards but to skip ahead this will bring players into the Temple of Eothas and if they choose to fight a man named Sargamis, he will drop the sword.

Magical Grimoires

A simple sorcery cheat

Anextli's Grimoire weapon in Avowed

There are a few skill trees in the game and going a certain route will determine the Envoy's class. Spells are quite powerful and useful for in-game exploration but players can still use magic thanks to weaponized books called Grimoires. There are two rares worth mentioning, but both require some points to be put into the Wizard's skill tree to unlock Mastery levels. Anextli's Grimoire can be found around Ivona's Threshold from a downed NPC and Beothel's Grimoire can be bought from a shop owner named Merylin in Paradis. Even better, the Common Grimoire of Elements is literally a common Grimoire and it requires no masteries. It can be purchased at most weapon shops or found in the Ruinous Cavern on the west side of Paradise, outside the gates. Players can fight for an additional reward Avowed here: Nacib.

The Philosopher's Riddle (Greatsword)

Turns into poison

The Philosopher's Riddle weapon in Avowed

  • Location: Castol's Folly

The Philosopher's Riddle is not in the least tied to a side quest. It's just laying down against some rocks if players go to the east side of the map and climb some ruins in Castol's Folly. The Philosopher's Riddle is a two-handed greatsword imbued with poison. Anyone who has played an RPG should know that poison will continuously damage an enemy. It is an effective weapon against bosses that have high HP but the weapon can be a bit slower to use than most.

3

Seven Strivings (Greataxe)

Builds momentum

Seven Strivings weapon in Avowed

  • Location: The Falls

  • Mission: Ralga (Bounty)

The Seven Strivings is a two handed ax although it looks more like a racket similar to the weapons that Garnet can equip in Final Fantasy 9. Technically, it's tied to a side quest even though it's just hanging around in the vicinity of the area.

Avowed: Best early game item

Here are some powerful unique items you can get before you ever leave the very first open zone in Avoved.

To the north of the map players can find The Falls and this is where they can fight the bounty known as Ralga. It's a tough fight because Ralga is massive but if players already have The Philosopher's Riddle then it will be easier. When Ralga and his minions are down, players can find the seven quests among some dead bodies. It will increase the player's speed on kill and also increase critical attack damage.

Staff of Pestilence (Quarterstaff)

Of Mana, but not of options

  • Location: Southeast Dawnshore (Spider Nest near Godless Altar)

The Staff of Pestilence will likely be the first Unique Quarterstaff that players can find in Avowed. Staff of Pestilence comes with two unique effects:

  1. Elemental Contagion: Hits Power attacks apply to the low elemental accumulation of the same elemental accumulation or status effect that affects you.
  2. Poison Lashes: Hits deal bonus Poison damage.

This weapon can be obtained in a small cave surrounded by spiders at the southeast end of Dawnshore

Elemental Contagion's effectiveness is a bit questionable, but players can probably build around it. Poison Lash, on the other hand, is quite useful early on. More damage is always good, and if players pair the Staff of Pestilence with some Warrior skills, they'll be able to make a formidable battle mag.

Sheathed in Summer (Dagger)

Another fiery blade

Sheathed in summer arms in Avowed

  • Location: Godless Ruins

  • Quest: Octav The Firebrand (Bounty)

The last rare weapon worth mentioning in the first few hours of the game is called Sheathed in Summer. It's another bounty side quest Avowedthis one focusing on a dwarf named Octav The Firebrand. He lies to the north in the godless ruins and players just need to loot his corpse to get the dagger. Like the last light of day, Sheathed in Summer is imbued with fire magic. Daggers don't usually have a good range but they are quick to thrust into an enemy, so this can be a good pair with a Grimoire since players have to wait for cooldowns after casting spells.
