Battlefield 6's seasonal events double down on FOMO

Battlefield 6 has had a strange launch for its first season. On the one hand, Battlefield: RedSec is a strong battle royale experience that gets more eyes on the franchise. Its destruction and map have been key points of praise, but for those who just enjoy multiplayer, it's been nothing but a source of ire. Battlefield 6 has been bombarded with reviews because RedSecwith players lashing out at BR to have the type of map and destruction they want in the base game. It has also been blamed, fairly or not, for the introduction of the battle pass and the in-game store for BF6while players are also unhappy that the pass contains challenges that can only be completed in BR mode. Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

The most important thing Battlefield The subreddit has been an echo chamber for negativity, as players fed up with the complaints have had to flee to alternative subreddits or social media platforms to discuss the game. Some Battlefield 6 players have pushed back against the negativity and tired of the endless complaints about colorful skins or map size. While the significance of these issues is debatable, it's hard to argue against the outrage when it comes to other issues, such as the broken promises of progression through Battlefield Portal. Another issue that no one is happy about is seasonal events, as they take the concept of “Fear of Missing Out” (FOMO) to new heights.

Battlefield 6's problematic event strategy explained

Unlike most live service games, where public events are completely separate from the main event and players are free to unlock the rewards regardless of where they are in the battle pass, Battlefield 6 forcing players to progress through the Season 1 Pass just to have the chance to engage with the smaller Season Passes. And it's not like they have to move on just a bit down the road either; players must complete almost the entire battle pass to access seasonal events when they debut, as only mastery levels are exempt from the gate. This means that players must reach level 93 i BF6 the battle passes, and they don't have long to do so.

It is unclear how grumpy Battlefield 6s season 1 event passes will be. Although they are small and easy to clear, players have to push themselves if they want to make it through the battle pass and have a chance to earn them.

Battlefield 6s first seasonal reward path can be accessed starting November 18th and will disappear on December 9th. It includes the DB 12 Shotgun, and it is currently unclear if this weapon will be unlockable after the event through challenges. Essentially, this gives players only 3 weeks to finish the battle Battlefield 6 if they want a full 3 weeks to complete the California Resistance event. The second event, Ice Lock, also offers a special unlock in the form of the Ice Climbing Ax melee weapon. It starts on December 9th and ends when Season 1 does, likely mid-January. FOMO around guns is a real fear for gamers because it's unclear if there will be anything like it Call of Dutys arsenal to acquire weapons after events, but it gets even worse when it takes a massive battle pass to even start the extra seasonal gate.

This is all the more frustrating given Battlefield 6s challenge-focused pass progression system. While players can progress through XP, these unlocks are extremely slow, and progression basically stops once players have completed all of their challenges for the week. Avoiding these challenges is not always something players like – the aforementioned requirement to play Battlefield RedSec is a real point of frustration for some — but with the slow token unlocks for regular play, there isn't much to choose from. With some of the challenges requiring wins Battlefield 6 game modes the players might not even like, this just gets more boring. But if players want to participate in seasonal events, they have no choice but to push through that pain, and they need to do it as soon as possible.

There's still hope for Battlefield 6 to get it right

While players are understandably upset by this seasonal event reveal, claiming they feel forced to buy a Battlefield PRO token or tier jump just so they can unlock the new shotgun and melee weapon, perhaps Battlefield Studios will adjust their approach after seeing the pullback. After all, the developers have already removed Battlefield 6s most controversial skin and adjusted the brightness of the green color on another, indicating that the teams working on the game are hearing the feedback. The quick recovery of Conquest's ticket changes also supports this. While Battlefield 6s skin criticism may be over the top in the eyes of some fans, especially considering how tame and basic its shop content is, it's unlikely to find any player giving the seasonal event situation their stamp of approval. For now, all fans can do is make their voices heard and point to how virtually every other game handles seasonal events as an example of how things should change.
