Battlefield 6The 1.1.3.0 update will be released on December 9th, and players have been left extremely frustrated by some upcoming changes to the Breakthrough game mode. The players are worried that the defensive side will be quite miserable Battlefield 6 Breakthrough games, with some changes that favor the strikers greatly.
The breakthrough game mode is very simple. There are two teams: attackers and defenders. Attackers have a limited number of tickets (lives) to push through and capture the defenders' zones. There can be many capture points in each zone, and defenders are pushed further back each time the attackers capture a zone. But in the patch notes for Battlefield 6The 1.1.3.0 update that arrived on December 9, developer Battlefield Studios adjusted the vehicle count in Breakthrough for most maps. These changes caused defenders to lose vehicle spawns across different zones, while attackers gained them. In practice, this will fundamentally shift the balance of every breakthrough map in favor of the attackers, in some cases quite heavily.
The Battlefield Labs program is making a comeback
Battlefield 6 developer DICE confirms the return of Battlefield Labs, revealing when players can jump in and what the next test will contain.
Battlefield 6's groundbreaking balancing act hasn't fared well
In the official Reddit thread announcing Battlefield 6 Breakthrough changes, many of the comments were extremely unhappy with the solution. One player described them as “absolutely insane” and claimed that playing defense “is going to be even more of a struggle now.” As they point out, it has the potential to result in “insane profits” for attackers going forward. Another player went so far as to say they'd “probably just want to quit” if they ended up starting a breakout game as a defender, as the changes now seem to lean towards an inevitable striker win. This may not be how it works in practice, but players need to see it before they truly believe these solutions are the right ones. Right now, however, the proposed changes seem to have missed the mark with society.
Battlefield Studios has already acknowledged player feedback ahead of the update. The developer jumped in to say that the changes are “aimed at balancing the win rate between attackers and defenders that we see internally,” indicating that attackers are largely finding it too difficult to win in Breakthrough at the moment, despite players' anecdotal experiences. It says the plan is to “continue to make adjustments to Breakthrough based on player experience and feedback to bring each sector closer to feeling challenging, rewarding, and doable with the right level of teamwork,” so players should expect further changes based on how this update unfolds.
This isn't the first controversial update for the Breakthrough game mode. Last month, Battlefield Studios changed Breakthrough to 48 maximum players, down from 64. While aiming to make the maps feel bigger, many complained that this only made them feel emptier, a patchwork solution to a major problem with the game. As a live service game, some missteps with game balance are unfortunately inevitable, and the only hope is that Battlefield Studios can eventually find the right balance while players are interested in the game.
Battlefield 6The December 9th Winter Offensive update will end Season 1 of the game's live service offerings. Battlefield Studios has yet to reveal Season 2, although it's a safe bet to assume it won't be too much longer after Season 1 for the next content release. There have already been a bunch Battlefield 6 Season 2 is leaking, so there's at least an idea of what players can expect from upcoming content. It's worth remembering that plans can change during development, so there's no guarantee that leaked content will actually make it into the final game.
