Summary
-
In contrast to the popular view, Astarion does not reject most morally good choices in team 1.
-
Astarion likes to complain, although he does not necessarily dislike.
-
His actual disapproval is usually related to forgiveness, something he does not necessarily agree.
One of my pet speaches with Baldur's Gate 3 is that a couple of companions, namely Lae'zel and Astarion, reject when you are not comically evil. Don't misunderstand me, it's good to have a variety of opinions within a party, and I would understand these reactions if these two were evil characters, but that is simply not the case.
Both Lae'zel and Astarion have reason to be abrasive and standing; The former grew mainly into a militant cult, and the latter is a victim of psychological and physical abuse. If you talk to these two, it is clear that they are not goody-two shoe, but they are not very immoral (unless Astarion rises, that is). Even Minthara, which is really much more evil than the other two, has a softer side.
He just loves to complain
However, according to a Reddit post of Uldinepriest0rbfa, Astarion is not as unpleasant as you may think. A named Baldur's Gate 3 fan compiled all morally good choices that the player can make during the game's first act, and found that Astarion only rejects 27 percent of them. In fact, he actually approves a couple of “good choices.”
Now a non-reaction to something necessarily not necessarily astarion has a heart of gold either. He is only neutral in many choices that the player can make, especially those that do not affect his chances of surviving.
The choices he rejects tend to be centered on forgiveness or previous rewards for good deeds. Astarion has deep nails because of the difficult action taken against him, so it is only natural to see the player forgive those who have done wrong at the party annoys him.
“People are confused because Astarion, more than anything, likes to complain about doing good deeds. Including (especially) such as he approves of,” writes Nomoremonkeybrain. In its core, Astarion is just a whiner. He is not necessarily against helping others, as long as he can complain about it afterwards.
I still do not necessarily think that every negative reaction is motivated, but I appreciate the complexity of Baldur's Gate 3's characters. There are even elections that Astarion approves, but he will still orally say he does not approve it. There is an assumption in games (and other media) that characters usually say the truth, but that is not necessarily the case, which we can observe with the contrast in Astarion's real emotions and his public persona.
