Baldur's Gate 3 was briefly the Game Awards' most successful game ever

Last night, Baldur's Gate 3 picked up its eighth win at The Game Awards. The critically acclaimed RPG picked up six awards in 2023 and followed it up with a seventh last year, tying it with The Last of Us Part 2 as the most successful game at the ceremony, with the Naughty Dog title winning seven times in 2020.

Its eighth award last night took Baldur's Gate 3 ahead of The Last of Us Part 2 in The Game Awards leaderboard, but unfortunately for the team at Larian, that honor didn't last long.

Until last night, Baldur's Gate 3 and The Last of Us Part 2 were tied for seven awards each.

In 2020, The Last of Us won Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Sound Design, Best Performance, Innovation in Accessibility and Best Action/Adventure Game. In 2023, Baldur's Gate scooped the awards for Game of the Year, Best Performance, Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer Game and Player's Vote, and it followed up on these last year by retaining its Best Community Support crown.

When Baldur's Gate 3 won its third consecutive award for Best Community Support during last night's show, the game became the outright most successful game at The Game Awards, but it didn't last long with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 breathing down its neck.

Every winner at The Game Awards 2025

If you missed the show or just need a recap, we've rounded up all the 2025 Game Awards winners here, complete with some handy facts.

By the time Baldur's Gate 3 won its eighth award, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 already had five (Best Score and Music, Best Independent Game, Best Independent Game, Best Art Direction and Best Performance by Jennifer English), and it was still nominated in five more categories.

In what felt like an inevitability, it won four of its remaining five (Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Role Playing, and Best Narrative), losing out only on the Players' Voice Award to Wuthering Waves, quickly seeing off Baldur's Gate 3 in the process.

It was less than 45 minutes between Baldur's Gate 3 taking the “Most Successful Game Ever” crown and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tying things up, and another 17 minutes between Clair Obscur's eighth and ninth wins of the night. These two gongs cemented the French RPG as the most successful game in a single night and the most successful game of all time at The Game Awards.

It's hard to argue that any game deserves that feat more.
