Starfinder: Afterlight's crew of spacefaring companions welcomes a new member: Preach, an insectoid Shirren mystic who protects an absolutely adorable caterpillar. Preach is voiced by award-winning actor, director and performance capturer Neil Newbon. Newbon has previously announced that he is serving as the voice director for Starfinder: Afterlight. Since then announcement, fans have been eager to know if he would lend his iconic voice to the project, and now they have the answer.
Neil Newbon Joins Starfinder: Afterlight Cast As Preach The Shirren Mystic
Speaking with Game Rant, Newbon revealed that it took “very little persuasion” from Epictellers Entertainment for him to step into Starfinder: Afterlight role. Preach joins the previously revealed crew of Kole Stryker (Fred Tatasciore), Tycho (Inel Tomlinson), Lu-323 (Melissa Medina), and Sterling (James Alexander), who team up to search for the missing Captain Khali (Carolina Ravassa).
- Name: Preach (and the Golden)
- Class: Mystic
- Ancestry: Shirren
- CASE: To become a high priest for his people, to protect the Golden One
Newbon described Preach as “a bit bookish” and very devoted to his role as “the Guardian of the Golden One”, a caterpillar prophesied to bring miracles to his people. He felt that Preach acts as “father” to the crew of Starfinder: Afterlight companion, a counterpart to Captain Khali's “mother” role. Newbon went so far as to dub his character “Bug Daddy” and “Daddy Preach,” nicknames that can find their place among Starfinder: Afterlight's fans.
Preaching is completely different than Baldur's Gate 3's Astarion, but the actor hinted that Preach may have something in store for romantic hopefuls: “Hey, bugs can be hot. I'm just saying. Like, a praying mantis, man. Look at them.” It is worth noting that romance is confirmed for Starfinder: Afterlight and seems applicable to every companion, but Newbon wouldn't confirm if Preach was actually romantic – it's highly likely though. Ravassa added that because of Newbon's talent, she felt that Preach would be a character that fans would find attractive regardless of his appearance:
“You know, Neil is so talented, he's going to make this insectoid sexy. Even with a weird voice or whatever else happens, it's going to be sexy.”
Starfinder: Afterlight players interested in getting to know Preach and the rest of the game's companions early can back the game's Kickstarter, which remains open through November 6. The game is currently scheduled to launch into Early Access sometime in 2026, with more character and cast reveals planned in the future.
