Arc Raiders is a huge success for Embark Studios, with over 350,000 concurrent players on Steam a couple of days after launch. The extraction shooter has achieved extreme popularity, and all that remains for Embark is to see how long they can extend Arc Raider's time on top.
The game has received much praise, with over 55,000 positive reviews on Steam. That said, a point of contention among players is the price of cosmetics. Arc Raiders already costs $40 to play, and some of the skins cost $24, over half the price of the game itself.
Arc Raider's pricing has drawn criticism
These high prices have drawn criticism from the community (nice place, PC Gamer). TheOnlyRealOne43 is clear in his beliefs, saying “Not only are skin prices absurd, but some of them copy the majority of an outfit into other outfits and give them a different head/chest piece.”
“I made a thread expressing this exact sentiment, and dolts kept telling me 'no one cares, just don't buy it bro'. How are you supposed to just shrug off a $25 skin bundle in a $40 game? That's unacceptable,” Dark_Throat replies.
The latest additions to the store, Leviathan and Wilderness Scout, have received similar criticism regarding pricing. One of those sets is a re-skin that costs $8, which causes more frustration.
Of course, people don't need to indulge in these cosmetics as they offer no in-game benefits. But charging exorbitant prices is usually due to developers targeting “whales” (big spenders), and the exploitation of these players is usually something communities don't agree with.
“These skin prices are pretty…brutal. And to add to that, we still have game impacting items in the battle pass…in a $40 dollar game,” writes Vovancheg31 in a separate thread.
Not everyone agrees that these prices are problematic, which is a common phenomenon when players are so enamored with a game that they tend to shut down any criticism. If the money is flowing, Embark probably won't care.
Arc Raiders is currently available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
