April 7th is a very busy day for Bethesda

Bethesda's Starfield seems to keep popping up every now and then in an effort to stay relevant, but its upcoming April 7, 2026 splash could be its biggest venture yet. To put it bluntly, April 7th is going to be a very busy day for Bethesda as it celebrates a new console launch for the open-world sci-fi RPG, one of the game's most significant updates to date, and a brand new story-driven expansion that includes its own set of exclusive content. Needless to say, this could be the comeback Starfield has been needed since its initial player count dwindled and its public reception plateaued at a somewhat flexible middle ground.

Bethesda has neglected to call this huge day RPG”Starfield 2.0″ — likely because it doesn't want to set expectations too high — but it's hard not to see it that way. Its PS5 launch will no doubt attract a new audience of players, its Free Lanes update makes significant feedback-inspired improvements to the base game, and its Terran Armada DLC looks like the kind of story and content that might feel worth coming back to this game to revive. Starfield will be revealed on April 7th and soon after, of course, but there's still plenty here worth getting excited about before that day arrives.

Starfield Free Lanes Update Bethesda Surprised

Starfield producer admits Bethesda was “surprised” players wanted more freedom to travel in space

GameRant sat down with Starfield's lead creative producer Tim Lamb to talk about the upcoming Free Lanes update and the why of it all.

Starfield is finally coming to PS5 on April 7th, 2026

Starfields upcoming PS5 launch was one of the worst-kept secrets leading up to the announcement, as there were far too many rumors and leaks to believe that it was simply fans getting excited about the prospect. Nonetheless, this represents one of the biggest moves open-world RPGs have ever made, simply because it marks the end of Starfields time as an Xbox console exclusive and, for the first time since launch, brings the game to a whole new audience on PS5 alongside its biggest update and expansion to date.

Although it's impossible to tell how many PS5 players have been waiting for Starfieldthere are some early signs of its popularity that are hard to ignore. Shortly after StarfieldThe PS5 version was announced, it shot to the top of the PlayStation Store pre-order charts, with its Premium Edition taking the top spot in the US. That alone suggests that there is a sizable audience that either couldn't play the game before or simply chose not to without a PS5 alternative. In other words, when Starfield launching on PS5 on April 7, it will be stepping into a significant market that hasn't been open to it in years.

Starfield's Free Lanes Update is its biggest patch yet

The RPG's PS5 launch is certainly something worth talking about, though Starfield's Free Lanes update is undoubtedly the standout event of Bethesda's big day. The reason for this is that the update may be the only thing that brings players back to the game who once swore off it for one reason or another. Free Lanes already exist Starfields most significant patch to date just in its scope, but what makes it an even bigger deal is that everything it adds to the game is based on frustrations many players have had with it since launch. In fact, its name and headline feature is the ability to fly freely between planets within a star system – something that has been requested for years.

Everything Starfields Free Lanes Update brings to the game

  • INTERPLANETARY TRAVEL SYSTEM — Fly freely between planets within a star system.
  • CRUISE MODE AUTOPILOT — Travel while managing ships, crew and craft.
  • NEW SPACE MEETINGS — More frequent dynamic events during travel.
  • ADDITIONAL SPACE POIs — New locations and discoveries as you explore.
  • X-TECH RESOURCE SYSTEM — New materials for upgrading gear and ships.
  • LEGENDARY EFFECT REPRESENTATIONS — Reroll and select weapon and gear perks.
  • NEW QUALITY STOCK — Superior and exceptional gear levels have been added.
  • SPEED OPTIMIZATION TERMINAL — Upgrade ship systems directly on board.
  • OUTPOST SHARED STORAGE — Access items across all outposts.
  • DATABASE SYSTEMS — Track planets, resources and discoveries in one menu.
  • OUTPOST THE COMMUNICATION — New Milliewhale pet with customization.
  • STARBORN UPGRADES Ability — Rank powers without New Game Plus.
  • QUANTUM PENETRATION UNIT — Store and transport items between New Game Plus games.
  • NEW LAND VEHICLE ADDITION — Moon Jumper walkthrough options.
  • NEW COLLECTION SYSTEM — Stat-boosting collectibles across the game.
  • IMPROVED SURVEY FLOW — Fewer loading screens, smoother transitions.

In addition to the ability players now have to freely fly between planets within a star system, StarfieldThe Free Lanes update also throws new space encounters into that mix, new points of interest for players to discover, and new dynamic encounters that will occur during the player's travel time in space. A new resource called X-Tech will also allow players to upgrade their gear and ship even further in Starfieldhigher gear levels have been implemented to allow players to craft and acquire even better gear, the new Moon Jumper land vehicle and the Milliewhale outpost pet will be obtainable, and stat-boosting action figures that resemble Fall-out's Bobbleheads will be discoverable when the update arrives.

That's not all, though, as Free Lanes adds a hefty list of quality-of-life improvements to the game as well. With the update, players will be able to upgrade their ship while on board, and a new database system will allow them to track discovered resources across star systems and even fast travel to those locations directly. Significant improvements have also been made Starfields New Game Plus mode, such as the ability to transfer items between playthroughs with the new Quantum Entanglement device and upgrade the Starborn's powers without rediscovering artifacts. Finally, players will now have shared storage between their outposts, and the game overall will have fewer loading screens and smoother transitions.

Starfield's Terran Armada DLC brings new story content and gameplay to the base game

Finally, StarfieldThe Terran Armada DLC will arrive on April 7 alongside Free Lanes and the game's PS5 launch. Unlike Shattered Space, which largely focused on a single location, StarfieldThe Terran Armada DLC takes a much broader approach by introducing a new faction. The Terran Armada itself is positioned as a major new threat, consisting of a technologically advanced military force backed by robot soldiers and a clear goal of uniting humanity under one authority. That attitude alone makes Terran Armada something that can actively affect multiple systems, encounters, and the overall feel of Starfields world.

All Starfield's Terran Armada DLC comes with the game

  • NEW STORY AND FACTION — Story centered on the Terran Armada faction.
  • INCURSION EVENT SYSTEM — Repeated combat events that can even interrupt fast travel.
  • NEW ROBOT COMPANION — Recruitable Terran Linked Ally.
  • NEW SHIP PARTS — Terran-themed ship modules and buildings.
  • NEW WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT — Expanded combat equipment.
  • GALLERY OPTIONS — Unlocking new exclusive apartment.

It's actually about how players will engage directly with the DLC as well, with the Terran Armada introducing new Incursion events that can take over locations in space and on planets, forcing players into combat scenarios that disrupt normal travel and exploration in Starfield. These encounters aren't just one-off missions either, as they can be revisited for high-level gear, new resources like X-Tech, and additional rewards tied to the expansion. Along with that, the DLC brings new quests, enemies, customization options, and even a faction-bound companion, so there's a lot more than a story going on here.

So obviously April 7th isn't just another update for Starfieldbut something that feels more like Bethesda finally putting all their pieces on the table at once. The PS5 launch opens the door to a whole new audience, the Free Lanes update addresses some of them Starfields most talked about questions, and the Terran Armada DLC aims to give players a reason to actually stay when they return. It might not feel like a complete reset, but it's hard to look at everything coming on the same day and not see it as a potential major turning point for a sci-fi RPG that's been struggling in an uphill battle for years.
