Alleged Nintendo Switch 2 accessory leaks hint at much bigger console

Important takeaways

  • Some alleged Nintendo Switch 2 accessories have recently been listed online.
  • The listings, which advertise a carrying case and a tempered glass screen protector, both suggest that the Switch 2 will be significantly larger than its predecessor.
  • Nintendo has committed to officially reveal the Switch 2 by March 31, 2025.

Multiple listings for alleged Nintendo Switch 2 accessories have appeared online, suggesting that the upcoming console will be significantly larger than its predecessor. This development adds to the growing pile of circumstantial evidence pointing to the possibility that the Switch successor has already entered mass production.

Taiwanese parts supplier Weltrend Electronics previously hinted that the Switch 2 could enter mass production by the end of September 2024. While it is unclear if this actually happened, Nintendo's latest financial report shows an unusual increase in raw material inventory, suggesting that the company has indeed begun mass assembly of something new. The complexity and diversity of global technology supply chains make it incredibly difficult to prevent leaks once consumer electronics enter mass production. That's why details like the physical dimensions of new smartphones often appear online long before their official announcements, usually through third-party accessory lists.

Rumor: Switch 2 console production may increase

Some newly discovered shipping data may suggest that Nintendo is accelerating mass production of its upcoming Switch 2 next-gen console.

Something similar may have just happened with the Switch 2, as several accessories allegedly designed for Nintendo's next console have recently appeared on 1688.com, an e-commerce platform operated by Chinese retail giant Alibaba Group. One of the items, first spotted by Famiboard user lanamoon, is a protective case said to fit the Switch 2, measuring 290 x 135 x 45mm. By comparison, the original Switch model from 2017 measures 239 x 102 x 13.9mm. Much of the depth of the newly listed case appears to be allocated for cushioning, so even if the listing is based on the console's actual dimensions, it's highly unlikely that the Switch 2 will be anywhere near 45mm thick.

Nintendo Switch 2 may have 15% bigger screen than Switch OLED model

The dimensions of the carrying case therefore mean that the next Nintendo console will be significantly larger than the current generation. This suggestion is consistent with an early analyst report from 2024 that predicted the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch screen. Such a screen would have a 15% longer diagonal compared to the 7-inch panel of the Switch OLED model.

Aside from this carrying case, a purported tempered glass cover for the Switch 2 has also surfaced online. Images on its store page 1688.com include comparisons with what appears to be an equivalent Switch cover, which also suggests that the new console will be significantly larger. Although it is unclear whether these comparisons are made with a cover for the original Switch or the OLED model, the latter seems more likely given the aforementioned theory of a 15% longer diagonal. All of this also seems to support recent rumors suggesting that the Switch 2 dock will be significantly bulkier than its predecessor, possibly to accommodate a larger console.

Nintendo has now said twice that the Switch successor will be officially revealed before the end of the 2024/25 financial year, which ends on March 31. The Switch 2 therefore seems unlikely to be released before Q2 2025 at the earliest, and could likely hit the market much later.
