Important takeaways
- Luffy's transformations are crucial power-ups during battles, with different strengths and weaknesses.
- Gear 2 increases Luffy's speed and strength but drains his energy quickly.
- Gear 5, Luffy's latest form, grants near invincibility and the ability to manipulate objects.
Just like most other Shonen anime series, One Piece is no stranger to new transformations that act as power-ups for the characters. While not as flashy and common as in many other franchises, transformations are often an important part of an arc, whether they serve to increase the strength of a hero or even a villain. Because of this, they often have a lot more weight to them once they appear compared to other series.
As such, the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, has gone through quite a few of his own One Piece. These transformations have often served as the difference in the battles they have been used in, although they are not completely infallible. So let's go through all of Luffy's different transformations and take a look at all of their strengths and weaknesses.

One Piece: Why Kizaru is the Most Underrated Admiral
Despite being one of the strongest marines, Kizaru is still quite underrated among the admirals, so let's look at why this is!
Luffy's base form
The default state

Romance Dawn |
While this isn't technically a form, this is essentially the state Luffy is in throughout and the one he used when he began his journey as a pirate, so it's worth mentioning with the rest of them. Over the years, Luffy has become stronger and has learned to rely on more than just his Devil Fruit, which is why he can now use Haki masterfully. He applies this power to his regular attacks even in his base form.
Hero? No! We are pirates! I love heroes but I don't want to be one!
Due to this knowledge and power he has gained over the years, Luffy remains a formidable fighter even without realizing some of his transformations. But this form alone could only get him so far, as he had to unlock a stronger stat as early as Enie's Lobby arc against Blueno. Although this state is stronger than ever before due to Luffy's ability to use Haki, it is still quite low on the power scale.
Gear 2 Luffy
Luffy's first transformation ever

Enie's lobby |
The first transformation Luffy ever displayed in the series was Gear 2, which he used against Blueno during their fight at Enies Lobby. By controlling the blood flow in his body and making it travel faster to the different parts of his body, he supplies those body parts with more oxygen and nutrients, making him much stronger and faster than before. Because of this, the increase in blood flow and oxygen that the body uses causes this form to release steam.
You won't be able to catch me. Each of my techniques goes to the next level.
Due to Gear 2's increased strain on his body, Luffy is unable to use the form for too long as it uses up all of his food and energy reserves to maintain. Using Gear 2 makes him much hungrier than usual, but can even paralyze him for a time if he uses it too much. This form made Blueno short, but was not strong enough to defeat Rob Lucci during their battle at Enies Lobby.

One Piece: The Monster Trio's Strongest Moves, Explained
The monster trio is made up of some of the strongest pirates on the seas, so let's take a look at their most powerful techniques!
Gear 3 Luffy
Luffy's Gigantic Transformation
|
First appearance |
One Piecechapter 403, “Mr. Rivalry” |
|---|---|
|
Story Arc |
Enie's lobby |
Similar to Gear 2, this transformation uses Luffy's powers that he has gained due to his rubber body's unique properties. However, unlike Gear 2, this is less of a form and more of a temporary power-up, as it requires Luffy to use the air in his legs to inflate his arms to gigantic size. By biting his thumb hard, he creates an opening that allows him to blow air into his legs to inflate his arm.
If it's backbone you want, I'll show you another tactic. Gears… Third!
Not only does his arm increase in size comparable to that of a giant, namely Oars, but it packs as much punch as it seems, with Luffy shown to be able to destroy entire buildings and massive structures with just one hit. In his fight against Rob Lucci, Luffy destroyed a significant portion of Enie's Lobby when he knocked Lucci out of it. However, once he uses it, his entire body loses energy, causing him to shrink in size, look like a child, and lose stamina.
Nightmare Luffy
A powerful, disposable form
|
First appearance |
One Piecechapter 476, “Nightmare Luffy” |
|---|---|
|
Story Arc |
Thriller Bark |
During the events of Thriller Bark, Gecko Moria proved to be an extremely dangerous threat for the heroes to face, to the point that even Gears 2 and 3 were not enough to defeat him. Although quite weak on his own, his powers were quite formidable, though they also proved to be his undoing when Luffy managed to harbor 100 shadows to unlock his Nightmare Luffy form.
Oh, you big idiot. What are you going to step on? No one is under your feet.
This form was incredibly powerful from a physical standpoint, making Luffy much larger and giving him more physical strength than any of his other forms. This was seen in his climactic battle against Åror, where he used his incredible strength to stop Åror's punches outright and even throw him around. Although the form lasted for a very short time, it goes down as one of Luffy's strongest.

Gear 4 Luffy
The state with the most subforms
|
First appearance |
One Piecechapter 784, “Gear 4” |
|---|---|
|
Story Arc |
Dress pink |
Gear 4 is perhaps the most interesting of all of Luffy's transformations as it contains multiple sub-forms within it, each with their own specialty in a combat situation. The defining characteristic of this form is the fact that this is the first of Luffy's transformations to use Haki, covering much of his body in Armament Haki to make his attacks do much more damage. Similar to Gear 3, Luffy inflates his body by blowing air into his arms, but this time it affects his entire body rather than just one limb at a time.
You made my friends cry and drove my crew mates crazy. But you still haven't fallen, so I'll take it all in! Gear… Fourth!
Unlike the other forms, Gear 4 has different states that emphasize different aspects of combat situations that Luffy can shuffle through to suit whatever situation he finds himself in. For example, Boundman is a condition that makes his body quite fluid but also gives his attacks a ton of power behind them, allowing him to simulate flight by kicking the air. On the other hand, Snakeman makes Luffy's keep Luffy close to the size of his normal state, being much slimmer and giving his punches an incredible increase in speed and mobility.
Gear 5 Luffy
The power of the sun god Nika
|
First appearance |
One Piecechapter 1044, “Warrior of Liberation” |
|---|---|
|
Story Arc |
Wano |
The biggest and still the most mysterious of all of Luffy's transformations is his most recent; Gear 5. Not only is this the most unique transformation in terms of powers and abilities, but also because of the near invincibility it gives Luffy while in this state, essentially giving him the powers of the toon power both offensively and offensively . defensively. Although Luffy's has only been shown with this form very briefly, the potential it has is limitless, given that fans know next to nothing about it in the current setting.
This… is my top. This is Gear 5!
Gear 5 made its debut in Luffy's grueling battle against Kaido, who was a foe that proved to be far too much for Luffy to contend with, even in his strongest form at the time. After being pushed to the brink of death, Luffy's Devil Fruit underwent an awakening and was revealed as one of the most powerful Mythical Zoan Fruits in One Pieceturns Luffy into the Sun God Nika state. In Gear 5, Luffy can do basically whatever he wants by adding the rubber properties of his Devil Fruit to any object next to him. Although he couldn't really hurt Gorosei, Gear 5 Luffy is currently the strongest known character in the entire series.
One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
