A Minecraft movie launches an Oscar campaign

Look, there's no denying that A Minecraft Movie went from “Most Likely To Bomb At The Box Office” status to becoming a cultural and financial juggernaut, ending its run with a total of $957 million and launching “Chicken Jockey” in the process, a phenomenon so big that a movie chain devoted an entire day to it.

But in terms of quality – we won't yuck you, but it's not the best acted or directed film to grace the Silver Screen. But Warner Bros. thinks it is, and it's now launching a promotion for A Minecraft Movie ahead of awards season.

No, we're not kidding. Jack Black for Best Actor is a legitimate push.

Does a Minecraft movie even have a shot? Probably not

As first spotted by Insider Gaming, WB has created an entire page dedicated to promotions for A Minecraft Movie to get a serious run during awards season.

It's worth noting that this is simply a promotion, but promotions are usually the precursor to actually getting nominated before, well, winning. This particular campaign has everything from Best Actor for Jack Black to Best Picture to, of course, Best Original Song, for which it's pushing “I Feel Alive” and “Steve's Lava Chicken.”

Whether any of these are picked up for official nominations remains to be seen, but you have to hand it to WB to really believe what it's put out. At least it has brought A Minecraft Movie back to the forefront of everyone's minds. Come on, there's a sequel that's been greenlit.

That said, as crazy as it is to believe, there's a better than zero chance that one of these songs will end up in a nomination somewhere. It's not like modern cinema is awash with original songs, and children's films usually get at least one nod.

Also, I wouldn't doubt it if Jack Black reprized his Steve persona and actually performed a song at one of these events. It's the exact kind of performance that would go viral, and given how poor ratings have been for these shows, Black, errr, Steve could be the person to revive things. Long live Chicken Jockey.
