GreedFall 2 doesn't really break a long tradition of spider games

French studio Spiders is best known for making mid-budget action RPGs, and its next big title, GreedFall 2: The Dying World, doesn't deviate too far from the company's formula. As the name suggests, GreedFall 2 is a successor to the 2019 action RPG GreedFallset in an 18th century colonial setting with fantasy elements. Both games have relatively similar gameplay, though GreedFall 2 takes more direct inspiration from early BioWare-style RPGs, especially when it comes to combat. However, the one aspect of Spider's upcoming game that differs significantly more from its predecessor is its plot.

Although technically a sequel, GreedFall 2: The Dying World does not directly continue the story of the original GreedFall. Instead, it's more of a prequel than a proper sequel, sort of Red Dead Redemption 2 is that Red Dead Redemption 1. The game features an all-new cast of characters, and with the exception of a few occasional references to the plot of the first game, has a self-contained story that can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge. GreedFall 2in that sense, isn't exactly the direct successor that some might have hoped for. This approach continues a trend that has been present in all of Spider's games thus far.

While GreedFall 2 does its best to maintain the franchise formula, it's not without a handful of changes that improve and build upon its predecessor.

Despite being a company with less than 100 employees, Spiders has a pretty decent repertoire. In the 15+ years since its establishment, the studio has launched a total of 7 different games and ported a handful of third-party titles to consoles. Interestingly though, it hasn't once released a game with a “2” in the name; at least not until GreedFall 2. For whatever reason, Spiders has a habit of creating new IPs instead of focusing on their existing franchises and because of that, they've never developed a proper sequel to any of their games.

Some of Spiders' games have had prequels and paraquels, but not sequels

While some of the Spiders' titles have spawned short-lived franchises, there are catches in every situation. The first Spiders game to receive a successor of any kind was in 2012 Of orcs and men. Developed in collaboration with French studio Cyanide, this action RPG spawned two well-received prequels Styx: Master of Shadows and Styx: Shards of Darkness in 2014 and 2017 respectively. These games were not created by Spiders themselves, but by Cyanide.

Another Spiders game that got a sequel of sorts was the cyberpunk space RPG, March: War Logs. Just three years after this game's launch in 2013, another spider-developed RPG came calling The technomancer was released. Given how drastically different their names are, you might think the two titles are part of their own individual franchises, but that's not the case. As spiders themselves put it, The Technomancer is actually another “paraquel”. March: War Logs. It takes place in the same universe as the 2013 RPG, takes place concurrently with the events of the other game, and much like GreedFall 2has a new character.

It would be great if Spiders made a sequel to one of its games at some point

At this point, the fact that Spiders has done practically anything but release a sequel is somewhat surprising. The studio has made prequels and paraquels, of all things, but it has strangely refused to make a plain, straightforward sequel. Also GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldthe only game from the company that actually sounds like it's going to be a sequel, isn't a sequel. While there are some advantages to avoiding direct sequels and giving each game its own standalone story, it would be nice if Spiders would do a proper follow-up to one of their RPGs at some point. The current one GreedFall 2 looks promising, but a GreedFall the sequel that had directly picked up where the predecessor left off, depending on which ending the players chose in the original game, would have been amazing.
