PlayStation has become increasingly dependent on first-party IP over the past decade or so. While Sony obviously still has a good relationship with third-party publishers like Capcom and Konami, it's the first-party franchises that Marvel's Spider-Man, God of war, The last of usand Horizon which is used to really showcase PlayStation's latest hardware and bring new users on board. But PlayStation's first-party IP isn't just used to switch consoles.
In recent years, PlayStation has been slowly wading into the wider world of entertainment, and its arsenal of first-party IP is once again leading the charge. Live-action movies like Uncharted and Gran Turismoand shows like HBO's The last of us is just the tip of the iceberg for PlayStation's plans, and there's an upcoming live-action project that should lead to the return of a long-dormant franchise.
Gravity Rush may be on the verge of a comeback
A Gravity Rush movie is in the works
Back in August 2022, Matt Grobar of Deadline reported that a Gravity Rush The film was in development at PlayStation Productions, working with Scott Free Productions. At the time, it was reported that Emily Jerome would write the screenplay for the film, while Anna Mastro would direct. Sony didn't officially confirm the project until January 2024, when some short live-action clips Gravity Rush the film was shown during a CES reel.
The extremely brief footage came and went with little to no fanfare from Sony itself, and no official details have been given about Gravity Rush movie in the year since CES 2024. But as far as fans currently know, there is still one Gravity Rush live-action adaptation in the works, and they could see it in the next year or two, as long as there aren't any major issues behind the scenes that fans don't know about.
The Gravity Rush movie could start a chain reaction
Debuted in 2012, Gravity Rush is a short-lived series created by Sony's Japan Studio, a developer best known for working on series such as Ape Escape, LocoRoco, Pataponand the early ones Astro Bot entries. Originally released as a PS Vita exclusive, Gravity Rush is an action-adventure game that sees players take control of Kat, a girl with the ability to manipulate the gravitational fields around her.
Fixed Gravity Rush got a PS4 remaster (courtesy of Bluepoint) in 2016 and got a sequel just a year later, Gravity Rush The series never became one of the PlayStation's heavy-hitters, although it received a good critical reception overall. Because of this, and a large part of the series' appeal is that the player gets to actively manipulate gravity themselves, a Gravity Rush live-action movie seems like a bit of an odd project for Sony to tackle, especially compared to its recently announced list of live-action projects that include Miscellaneous and Horizon Zero Dawn films.
But anything can be good if it has enough care, attention and talent behind it. And about Gravity Rush Live-action adaptation being a hit, a revival of the game series would be a no-brainer for PlayStation. A revival of Gravity Rush would also fit nicely into Sony's rumored strategy regarding dormant IPs, with VGC's Andy Robinson recently claiming that PlayStation is in the process of bringing back some “deep-cut old IP” to potentially complement the publisher's larger first-party releases. Gravity Rush would be an ideal choice for a smaller first-party title that might come between major franchise entries like Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet or the next God of war.
