Why the Heian Era is Important

The Era of the Strongest Sorcerers In JJK
-
Sukuna comes from the Heian era
The Heian era is one of the most important time periods in the world JJK. This is especially the case because this is the time when witchcraft was at its height. This is also the time when Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, comes from. During the Heian era, Sukuna was at the top of his game, and completely undefeated. Wizards from everywhere tested their skills against Sukuna and used to fight him to sharpen their own skills. Naturally, Sukuna delighted in massacring people during this era, and it was through his countless rampages that he eventually came to be known as the King of Curses and the strongest in history.
Over all heaven and earth he alone is the honored one. – Narrator
This time period had great significance in JJKespecially since the whole idea of starting the Culling Game was to restore the sorcery to its previous levels. The Heian era was always going to be extremely important, but unfortunately fans didn't get a proper look at it in the original manga. It's no surprise that readers were desperately hoping for a Heian era flashback, not only to flesh out Sukuna's life, but also to give fans a glimpse of what witchcraft was like back then and what kind of individuals existed back then. Of course, Culling Game gave fans a glimpse of some individuals from that era, but unfortunately not all of them were shown.
The significance of a Heian era flashback i JJK was huge. It's unfortunate that fans didn't actually get to see anything from this time period in the story other than bits and pieces, and if they had it would surely have been a phenomenal addition to say the least. In fact, the author is not too fond of flashbacks, and he himself has confirmed this in the past. Thankfully, in the JJK epilogue, he took a deep dive into Sukuna's past and gave fans a proper glimpse of the Heian era.
How JJK finally gave fans a hint of the Heian era
Sukuna and Uraume's flashback from the Heian era was finally shown
JJK's the epilogue spanned various characters. Fans saw the epilogue begin with none other than Ozawa, who met Yuji after the events of the Shinjuku Showdown arc. Obviously, this epilogue was set in the future, well after the conclusion of Shinjuku Showdown. Likewise, fans also got to see Nobara around the same time. This epilogue also occurred after the conclusion of Shinjuku Showdown. The epilogue that was the most shocking of all involved Panda, especially since it was set 62 years into the future, in the year 2080, much to the surprise of fans. Yuta's grandson was revealed to the fans in this epilogue. Last but not least, fans got to see Uraume and Sukuna's epilogue, and through that, their first proper look at these two Heian-era characters.
Who is it that Sukuna-sama never gets cold around me? – Uraume
The epilogue begins with Sukuna, the King of Curses, encountering a downcast child covered in frost and ice. Uraume is then introduced to the fans properly, and it seems they have no idea what was going on around them. Uraume goes on to imply that they killed their own parents with their powers unknowingly, as they cannot control their ability even the slightest. Much to the fans' surprise, the King of Curses actually sympathizes with Uraume and takes them in. On the surface, Sukuna claims he's only bringing them in because his own cooler was broken. But deep down, it is sympathy for this child, to whom he relates in some way, that compels Sukuna to protect them. It's clear that Sukuna and Uraume spend quite a bit of time together after this incident, and at the same time, fans are alerted to the fact that Sukuna is trying to get Uraume to improve his ability by trying to keep his flesh spoiled. , using the power of frost. This is how Uraume begins to gain control of his abilities, and it's a really exciting addition to the story. Uraume also continues to cook the meat for Sukuna often, which he also enjoys.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege reveals a major 62-year time jump
JJK undergoes a major time jump in Gege's epilogue.
As the story continues, Sukuna asks if they can cook people for him. Of course, this comment would confuse anyone, and Uraume was probably the same. But what worried Uraume the most was the fact that Sukuna never felt cold around them. Every person in their life has likely been slaughtered because of the ice ability they had. But the King of Curses never had a problem being around them. For Uraume, Sukuna became the only person who could stand up to the power, and at the same time give them protection and raise them as well. Similarly, Sukuna also wondered why Uraume never felt cold around him, and this had a completely different meaning. Everyone in Sukuna's life probably felt that he was a cold individual and did not dare to approach him. However, Uraume was clearly different, making Sukuna want to protect them more. Fans then saw these two characters walk away, marking the end of the epilogue.
JJK still needs more of the Heian era
The Heian era has more to offer
While this glimpse of the Heian era was certainly exciting for fans to see, they definitely need more. The Heian era has huge potential and fans would absolutely love it if the author decided to go ahead and write more such one-shots from long ago in the story. This period is full of intrigue and mystery, and above all, mighty powerful sorcerers. Fans would absolutely love to see more from these characters, and especially Sukuna taking them on in battle. The King of Curses honed his own skills while absolutely rampaging through these wizards, and fans would love the sight if it got them.
Hopefully, sometime in the future, the author decides to go back to the Heian era and develop this time. It would also be good for both JJK if Gege goes to showcase the many clans that existed then, and at the same time their many descendants that exist in the current timeline.
Jujutsu Kaisen's epilogue was released with its final volume. JJK's final volume will be released in Japan on December 25, 2024. The English version of the volume will be published sometime in 2025.
