Fate/Strange Fake has the potential to be the best Fate yet
With the first episode officially released at the end of the year, we look forward to the next great story from the Fate Series.
An April Fool's joke that turned into an official series
What would later become Fate/Strange Fake was actually one April Fools' Day posted on Ryogo Narita's (Durarara and Bacchano! Creator) website 2008, originally named Night of fate/conditions (a pun on “stay night” and “United States”). As the title suggests, it was a parody that featured one Fate game project that would take place in the United States.
After April 1, the service was taken down. But TYPE-MOON enjoyed the joke and later published it as a novel. In 2015 it was Fate/weird fake light novel series, with 9 volumes so far. The story is written by Narita, and Morii Shizuki is responsible for the illustrations.
Plot Summary: An Alternate Future of Fate/Stay Night
It started as a joke, but what is this series about? Well, an American organization gathered information during the Third Holy Grail War, which occurred in 1939 in Fate/Stay Night's chronology, and then began working on a way to reproduce it.
In 2009, they tried to do it in a town called Snowfield (but it didn't go as well as planned, causing strange summons to start happening). In this scenario, the (London-based) Mage's Association sends Langal and Faldeus to investigate Snowfield and this war, but Faldeus is actually a spy from the American organization. Timelines can be confusing, but this is basically a “what if” future for a part of Fate/stay night story.
Fate/Strange Fake Anime Staff
The anime series has a recurring cast from Fate/Strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn Film. A-1 pictures again it animates (usually Fate series are animated by Ufotable, but this one is different), with Hurry Enokido and Takahito Sakazume as directors.
For those who haven't seen the film, Enokido previously directed a music video with the title Flower Rhapsody and was an animation director on some Fate/Apocrypha section. Sakazume made his directorial debut with this series, but he has previously worked on series such as Black Clover, Destiny/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order. The Apocryphal Books is some kind of Weirdly fake prototype, so it's important that both directors worked on it, and they're also working hard on it.
Daisuke Ohigashi is the lead writer, and his portfolio includes Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (screenplay and scripts) and Nobility (script). Legendary composer Hiroyuki Sawano is responsible for the music (Sawano's portfolio is vast, but his latest works include Solo Leveling).
The prologue Whispers of Dawn
This year there will be a prologue film with the title Whispers of Dawn aired on TV (in Japan) and streaming (in Japan and internationally). It was supposed to air on New Year's Eve 2023, but ended up being pushed back to July. It was well received among niche audiences and also among people who are usually interested in Fate series.
This prologue probably won't be a must watch for those who just want to watch the anime series, but it can be a good introductory film to the franchise. It is available on Crunchyroll.
Fate/weird fake
Episode 1 will air on December 31, 2024 in Japan, but fans were able to watch the English dub in November. It will be streaming on Crunchyroll.
