Vegeta has been Goku's biggest rival since those days Dragon Ball Z. While Tien and Piccolo give Goku good fights, they couldn't keep up with him in the end. Not so for Vegeta. Vegeta was briefly outmatched by Goku in the Majin Buu Saga, but he immediately caught up Dragon Ball Supereven managing to unlock God Ki and Super Saiyan Blue without performing the God Ritual.
Goku and Vegeta's rivalry has become the lifeblood of Dragon Ball Superand it will gain even greater focus Dragon Ball Super 2 before the series finally decides the outcome once and for all. Vegeta is a prodigy born of hard work, always catching up to Goku and he is about to unlock his own Ultra form and win a decisive victory over Goku. Dragon Ball Super 2 will finally put an end to one of anime's best rivalries.
Vegeta defeats Goku in their final battle
Dragon Ball Super 2 covers the remainder of Toyotarou's post-Tournament of Power manga, beginning Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrols adaptation of Moro Saga. After Goku and Moro's final battle, the anime will have to deal with Granolah the Survivor Saga and Super Hero Saga. The manga's version of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is actually quite different from the movie, continuing for three chapters after Gohan Beast defeats Cell Max.
Dragon Ball Super 2 will have to relive Goku and Vegeta's final fight from the movie, which ends with Vegeta barely beating Goku. The manga doubles down on the idea of Vegeta being stronger than Goku by having Goku fight the Gohan Beast while using Perfected Ultra Instinct, while Vegeta only needed to use Super Saiyan Blue Evolved instead of Ultra Ego. DBS 2 could even animate the entire Super Saiyan Battle Royale i Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, showing when exactly Goku and Vegeta were taken out.
Goku will briefly surpass Vegeta in the Moro Saga, but Ultra Ego is strong enough to catch Vegeta up to Perfected Ultra Instinct almost immediately. As of Granolah, Survivor Saga, Goku and Vegeta will be dead even until the Prince of All Saiyans finally defeat Kakarot for good. Notably, this is the first time that Vegeta beats Goku in a fair fight. It connects to one of Dragon Balls core themes: there will always be someone better. In the movie, Goku even smiles after Vegeta beats him, showing that he has no ill will towards being outdone.
Goku and Vegeta have outgrown each other
As central as Goku and Vegeta's rivalry is Dragon Ball Superthey are both more than happy to fight other people if they find a more powerful opponent. Vegeta focuses on Goku Black during the Future Trunks Saga, while Goku hones in on Jiren during the Tournament of Power. This is to say nothing of Goku becoming formal rivals with Hit, Frieza and Jiren over the course of Dragon Ball Super. At this point, Goku and Vegeta's relationship has become far more important than their actual rivalry.
They will always be sparring partners, but Goku and Vegeta have outgrown each other. They not only have unique dynamics with Broly to explore, but follow their own paths to power. Goku has been training with Whis to develop Ultra Instinct, while Vegeta is being personally crafted by Beerus to become Universe 7's next God of Destruction. Goku and Vegeta will always motivate each other, but their rivalry has ended and Vegeta is the winner.
