The Pokemon Trading Card Game 30th Anniversary Set is going to be an all-time great. The Pokemon Company has slowly begun to trickle down out information about it, including the entire product range, which is already being scalped for up to 7x RRPand a row of the new cards.
The expansion will include a subset of 30 different Pikachus from the TCG's various artists, reprints of some older cards with a new edge, including the infamous Paldea Evolved Magikarp, Gengar Prime from Heartgold Soulsilver Triumphant, and Crystal Lugia from Aquapolis, and a host of other great new cards.
There's a lot to get excited about; But when the cards start leaking online, one card causes a bit of a ruckus. Alongside the new PUR rarity type, there will reportedly be an RGB rarity. The only card we've seen wield this rarity is a Mew, and it's caused a huge rift in the Pokemon TCG community.
The rare Mew RGB was reported to have been sourced from a livestream opening, as a handful of collectors have somehow gotten their hands on 30th anniversary merchandise well in advance of the expansion's September release. The new rarity is similar to the rare Furs, except with much less personality.
The example we've seen has an embossed green Mew on a dark blue background. It's similar to Victini from Black Bolt and White Flare, except much less appealing, and it's split the TCG community in two.
One half is convinced that the card is not genuine and that its appearance on the live stream where it was drawn was fabricated.
“Fake as hell,” petewoniowa2020 said in a Reddit thread. “Does not include the stamp. Does not include copyright information. Has obvious textural and printing issues. Has edge coloring that does not line up with the set. The artist is clearly doing fan art.” Some were quick to try to argue against the poster's views, but they had an opinion that was shared by many. “It looks so fake and horrible,” said xSEARLEYx, while Legal-Treat-5582 added, “This looks like one of those popular fake cards.”
On the other side of the coin are the people who think the card is real, but they just hate it. I think this is where I fall.
“Let the scalps fight over this one,” said Bitter-Fee2788. “Holy shit, this is one of the ugliest cards I've seen TCG make in a while.” One Reddit user pointed out that the colors had been inverted, with the Mew's pink becoming green and the gold background becoming blue, but that wasn't enough to convince the card's haters.
“My immediate reaction was a loud, 'EEEEEEW!'” read one comment, with another adding, “Yeah, my first reaction was that it's pretty ugly.”
I certainly wouldn't complain if I took it, especially in today's market, as it would be worth a pretty penny, but in my humble opinion, it's one of the worst Pokemon cards of all time.
