New official version of Game of Thrones with Jon Snow confirmed for 2027

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will now debut in early 2027 as a result of its first official delay. The real-time strategy game's new release window also serves as a rough timeline for when Jon Snow will return to virtual battlefields, which War for Westeros will have in spades.

Produced by Melbourne-based PlaySide Studios, War for Westeros is a new video game adaptation of HBO's Game of Thrones series. The Australian developer announced the project during the June 2025 edition of Summer Game Fest with a two-minute cinematic reveal trailer, which ended with a promise of a 2026 launch. PlaySide reiterated the broad release window as late as June 2026, but the schedule appears to have changed just a month later.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will launch in early 2027

In a July 2026 development update, PlaySide officially announced the postponement of its upcoming RTS. More specifically, War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027. The studio elaborated on the reasons for the delay, saying it needs more time to reach its desired quality standard. Still, a company representative added that overall development is going well and promises to share more details about the game in the latter half of 2026.

The same development update also provided more details on Jon Snow's previously teased role in Game of Thrones: War for Westerosmost notably through a short animation showing him rallying Stark troops into battle. PlaySide shared a similar clip of Tywin Lannister collecting his own banners. IN War for Westerosboth characters are designed as Hero units that can level up, unlock new abilities, and strengthen nearby allies, but their rally abilities seem to work slightly differently.

How Jon Snow's Ally Buff Compares to Tywin Lannisters in the New Game of Thrones RTS

Jon's buff is a simple area of effect spell that spreads outward from his position. Tywin, meanwhile, can choose where he wants to place his buff in his immediate vicinity. Not only does that give him greater effective range, but the rally call itself also covers about 50% more area than Jon's. PlaySide has yet to confirm the full details of either ability, but Tywin's rally appears to offer greater tactical flexibility, potentially at the expense of offensive or defensive strength.

House Stark and House Lannister will be joined by House Targaryen and the Night King's White Walker army as playable factions in PlaySide's upcoming Game of Thrones video game. The limited promotional material shared by the Australian developer so far suggests so War for Westeros is designed to emphasize responsive group movement and encourage players to use direct counters, which abound thanks to the game's rock-paper-scissors style. For example, exposed archers should usually be forced to disperse with cavalry, while large groups of infantry are a prime target for giants, who can hurl them into the air en masse without taking much damage. PlaySide also recently showed off Ashemark, a two-field map designed for one-on-one battles centered on defensive positions, flanking routes, and territorial control.
