Although Sony is ready to move on to a future of digital-only gaming, fans are clamoring for physical copies of the upcoming Soulslike Mortal Shell 2 has led to a physical edition being completely sold out. The expectation of Mortal Shell 2 is clearly high, but the demand for a certain physical edition has even surprised the publisher.
While the original Mortal Shell performed quite well, selling over a million copies, the sequel does not require playing it beforehand, as it is a standalone game. That could help the game succeed, as even Soulslike fans who didn't check out the original game that came out six years earlier will be able to jump right in. That may have been a contributing factor to this new development.
Mortal Shell 2 sold out of PS5 Physical Revered Edition
Mortal Shell 2 publisher Playstack has revealed that the game's PS5-exclusive Revered Edition, which includes a physical copy of the game, has largely sold out. Playstack says that demand exceeded expectations and that “supply across a number of retailers” has already been reserved. At the time of publication, Target, Best Buy, and Amazon all indicated that the PS5 Revered Edition was sold out, although GameStop is still taking orders. After this announcement, it's unlikely to last, as hopeful fans may flock to the site to try and get one of the remaining copies. Scalpers are also likely to compete, so those hoping to get a copy should do so as soon as possible.

Playstack has suggested that there is a chance for a second wave of Mortal Shell 2 Revered Edition is being produced, but that is not guaranteed. The publisher is meeting with its distribution partner to discuss the matter and promised to inform fans when it knows more. However, Playstack emphasizes that the decision is not up to it, so the outcome remains to be seen. It's also not clear how many copies of the Revered Edition were made available in the first place, so it's hard to gauge how popular this edition really is. The limited physical edition of Mortal Shell 2 was only revealed about a week before the final sale.
The timing of Mortal Shell 2 the announcement comes shortly after Sony announced that the PlayStation would go all-digital starting in 2028, with no new discs produced aside from games released before that year. A significant number of gamers have protested the change, with many vowing to only buy physical editions of games. With this announcement across the PlayStation family of consoles, it's entirely possible that there could be an increase in purchases of physical editions as a result. However, given Sony's lack of response to the complaints of vocal players, it doesn't seem likely that plan will change.
That said, Sony could face legal action following the announcement. Mexican federal representatives have said they intend to file an antitrust complaint against PlayStation over this planned change. They argue that the PlayStation Store would have a monopoly without physical discs, and that the move would cause businesses specializing in used games to close. There's no guarantee of success, but Sony is likely to experience friction with this move, if nothing else.
