Dead or Alive 6: Last Round, a re-release of the 2019 fighting game, was released last week. Crucially, the original version of the game was also delisted from storefronts – something that never goes down well with gamers.
After 405 reviews, the re-release has dropped to a “Mostly Negative” review score on Steam as players complain about incomplete features and gating of content previously owned by players.
Dead Or Alive 6: Last Round Hasn't Gone Over Well
Two of the biggest missing features are crossplay and rollback. The former refers to the ability to play with people who own the game on other platforms, while the latter is a feature that compensates for netcode lag in online games.
“The least you can do is give back characters I already own, you did that with [Dead or Alive 5] to [Dead or Alive 5: Last Round]. They could have done the bare minimum with crossplay and rollback,” writes a Steam reviewer.
Dead or Alive 6: Last Round costs $40 and includes five additional characters (Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel, and Tamaki) that were not included in the original base game.
While most of the content is being ported over, Team Ninja released a post revealing that the characters Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond (and their costumes) cannot be ported over to Last Round. Instead, players will be charged $11 per character (up from $8, their price in the original game).
Both Mai and Kula are crossover characters from SNK's The King of Fighters series, which probably explains why they can't just be brought over to what is technically a new game.
A couple of the new features, like photo mode, are particularly annoying to gamers because they are redundant additions when expected features like crossplay and rollback are missing.
“It's insulting. Tecmo just sees this as a coomer franchise and thinks they can get away with the bare minimum,” writes one impassioned reviewer. “I love Dead or Alive, but there's no way this could ever be a moderately competent fighting game with that kind of attitude. This review will stay the same until they at least do something.”
Needless to say, there are many disappointed fans who were expecting something fresher from a series that hasn't had a new game since 2019.
