Last of us part 2 is getting a multiplayer mode

With no official multiplayer mode on the horizon, one modder is taking matters into his own hands and building a multiplayer mod for The last of us part 2. The last of us part 2 was released in 2020 to widespread critical acclaim and managed to nab Game of the Year at this year's Game Awards show. But despite that The last of us part 2 was praised for its emotional single-player campaign, many fans were unhappy that multiplayer was nowhere to be found.

The original Last of us was best known for its single-player experience, with Joel and Ellie's story being the main reason for the game's immense popularity. However, The last of us also had a well-received multiplayer component to go along with the single-player experience in the form of Factions. Many fans of the franchise were hoping to see Factions make a comeback The last of us part 2but instead they were promised a standalone TLoU multiplayer experience. Unfortunately, that project was cancelled, so nothing really came of it Last of us against multiplayer in over a decade at this point.

Naughty Dog is busy developing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet at the time of this writing, and with The last of us part 2 six years old at this point, it's highly unlikely that the game will ever get a faction-style PvP mode. With that in mind, modder Speclizer has decided to build his own Last of us part 2 multiplayer mode, with various characters from the game duking it out. Speclizer recently shared 25 minutes of his Last of us 2 multiplayer mod in action, with a promise that it will be released in September. The catch is that PlayStation players will have to miss it.

The last of us part 2 multiplayer mode will only be available for the PC version of the game, which makes sense, but may still disappoint hardcore PlayStation fans. Mods are a major reason why some people prefer PC games because they open the door to unique experiences like this, which are not available on consoles, although the sad thing is that future PlayStation single player games will skip PC entirely. So while modders can release mods for games like The last of us part 2they will not be able to do the same for future projects as a potential Last of us part 3so hopefully that game has its own native multiplayer mode.

The last of us part 3 has been hinted at before, but an official announcement has yet to take place. Maybe the work that went into it The last of us online can be folded into a potential Part 3 so it may have a Factions-style multiplayer mode to go with its single-player experience, but who knows what direction it will ultimately take. In fact, it is entirely possible that there will never be a new official Last of us multiplayer mode released.

If so, it's good that modders like Speclizer are stepping up to build one Last of us multiplayer experience for fans on PC. It's just a shame that most upcoming PlayStation games will skip PC going forward.
