Sabertooth needs to be more like Doc Ock, less like poison

There were plenty of big moments at the recent State of Play showcase, and Marvel's Wolverine immediately started the event with a bang. Marvel's Wolverine is one of the most anticipated game releases of the year, but it's also a big change for developer Insomniac Games after being with Spider-Man for so long. Marvel's Wolverine already feels distinct from its web-slinging predecessors, although there will be a slight overlap.

One way it Marvel's Wolverine already taking notes from Spider-Man gameplay is through the expansive cast of characters. Marvel's Spider-Man and its sequel featured a main villain and several side enemies, with confirmation of Marvel's WolverineSabretooth and Omega Red prove that this will be the case again. When it comes to Sabretooth specifically though, he needs to feel more like Doc Ock did in the first one Spider Man, compared to Venom in the other game.

Wolverine PS5 game lets you censor it

Marvel's Wolverine developer Insomniac Games confirms that the upcoming PS5 title will offer players an opportunity to censor a noticeable aspect of it.

Marvel's Wolverine needs to make Sabretooth a constant presence throughout the story

Throughout many Marvel Comics stories, Wolverine and Sabretooth are consistently mortal enemies. The two mutants are apex predators with incredibly similar powers, but their differences in moral code have made them complete opposites where it counts. Logan constantly struggles with his rage, while Sabretooth embraces his animal instincts. It's not impossible to create a compelling Wolverine story without making Sabretooth a central focus. The Logan the movie proved it. However, that doesn't mean it isn't really difficult.

Marvel's Wolverine Not making Sabretooth a constant presence can easily feel like a missed opportunity. That's why you draw inspiration from Spider-Mans Doc Ock instead of Spider-Man 2's Venom is the strongest move. Both serve as the ultimate main antagonist in each chapter, but Doc Ock simply had a bigger presence throughout the first game's story.

Doc Ock is a part of Peter Parker's life from the beginning of the story

granted, Spider-Man 2 teases Venom early in the game, as Harry Osborn is a big part of Peter Parker's story. Getting to the actual Venom reveal is a pretty slow burn though. Doc Ock may not be the main antagonist at the beginning of the first one Spider-Man chapter, but he is introduced within the first hour of the game. What makes him such a compelling villain is seeing his descent into villainy after taking Mister Negative's place as the big bad.

Wolverine and Sabretooth's rivalry must be felt fully to reach the goal

One of the best ways to make Wolverine and Sabretooth's rivalry really feel real is to force the two into multiple encounters throughout the story. Several fights that eventually lead to a big boss meeting would really drive home their conflict. All characters that have been confirmed for Marvel's Wolverine has so far shown that there will be many interesting forays in, but they shouldn't just be one-offs. Sabretooth isn't the only character who needs to be a bigger part of the story. Marvel WolverineJean Gray has tons of potential to be a compelling supporting character, and Mystique is almost always an interesting character to delve into. Sabertooth is a special case, though, as his personality is an important mirror for Logan.

Sabretooth reminds Logan of what he can become if he doesn't keep his anger in check. The villain helps add deeper layers to Wolverine's gruff exterior, making him a more three-dimensional character. The Wolverine lore is expansive, and Sabretooth has continued to be an important part of that story.

Wolverine and Sabretooth's story opens the door to fascinating story possibilities

If Marvel's Wolverines story stays close to the character's lore in Marvel's Earth-616 timeline, then it could experiment with the fact that Logan and Sabretooth's rivalry has been going on for over a century. Both were born in the late 19th century, so their hatred runs deep. Throughout the decades, Sabretooth has constantly tortured Logan and toyed with him for his own amusement. He is a violent pest, and Marvel's Wolverine can hopefully succeed in making the character really feel that way. Moments where Sabretooth randomly shows up to fight would be the best way to do this. It could also prove to be a great way to keep players on their toes and aware of their surroundings, which would also be quite immersive.

Marvel's Wolverine could have even more character cameos waiting in the wings

Having characters like Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Mystique and Omega Red lined up for the cast is already exciting. It's a solid list, but there will potentially be even more revealed at some point Marvel WolverineThe release date is here and players jump into the game. Characters like Charles Xavier, Magneto, Cyclops and Gambit can make it feel even more like a full-fledged X-Men game. However, Insomniac Games needs to be careful when it comes to cameos. Throwing that many mutants into a story can quickly become overkill. So even if the cast only consists of the confirmed characters, it would still be a stacked cast.

Marvel's Wolverine pre-orders are now live. The Standard Edition costs $70 and includes a costume and a shoe set, while the Deluxe Edition costs $80 and has five exclusives and five exclusive shoes.

And now that it has been confirmed Marvel's Wolverine and Spider-Man split timelines, there's always the chance that Peter Parker or Miles Morales could have small cameos. Even if it's not Peter or Miles, there is potential for overlap with supporting characters. It remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be too surprising if Insomniac Games wanted to create a shared universe. Standalone titles are probably the best though, as they allow each game to further explore specific lore. As of now, it is at least known that Sabretooth will play some sort of role in the story. Only time will tell how big his role is, but hopefully it turns out to be a more important part than just a one-off meeting with the boss.
