The number of roguelike games on Steam is too high to count, but every now and then a real gem appears on the platform. For every popular Steam roguelike like Hades 2, Slay the Spire 2and Mewgenics that have seen massive success recently, there are hundreds of others that fly under players' radars. However, the upcoming indie roguelike Sin and siege sells itself on a unique premise that turns out to be the opposite of what Hades 2 offers players.
While most roguelikes on Steam are indeed “rogue-lites” by definition, this genre shares common features such as the need to play through multiple runs, save some type of power between runs, and level up after each run to have a better chance of succeeding on the next. A game that Hades 2 has players descend through multiple zones to reach the House of Hades, fighting through bosses that protect it along the way. Sin and siege takes a different approach to a similar premise, tasking players with protecting Hell from an onslaught of monsters, and having to rebuild structures and defenses each time they fail.

Sin & Siege charges players with protecting and rebuilding Hell, rather than infiltrating it
A city sim meets management simulator that Sin and siege is a rarer breed of roguelite than other offerings on Steam. Compared to an action roguelite like Hades 2 or a deck builder like roguelit Slay the Spire 2, Sin and siege puts a unique spin on the genre by requiring players to manage their defenses against incoming attacks. If they fail, players must rebuild the infernal circles of hell again, giving players almost endless opportunities to improve their strategy and hone their city-swimming and tower defense skills.
The story of sin and siege
IN Sin and siegeplayers take on the role of Hell's Architect and Warden, who must prevent the destruction of the Heart of Darkness at the hands of the Light Forces. A game where demons are allies and angels are enemies is nothing new; the Bayonetta the series features angelic enemies and Diablo even forcing players to battle the high heavens from time to time. However, having players actually protect Hell from angelic powers provides a unique supporting premise Sin and sieges gameplay.
Sin and siege does not currently have a planned release date.
The Gameplay of Sin & Siege
Sin and siege is about cycles and growth, improving Hell's defenses with each new run. The core of the game Sin and siege begins by expanding the player's resource pool by harvesting sins and using them to build structures to protect the Heart of Darkness from incoming light forces. Creating more demon works will also help improve the function of Hell's facilities and strengthen defenses as players prepare their tower defense-like strategy for the incoming attack. Players must also take into account the different circles of Hell, each of which acts as a different layer on the map with their own unique characteristics that can make or break the player's defenses.

The seven deadly sins play a big role in Sin and sieges gameplay, with each controlling a different aspect of the game's management loop. For example, Sloth controls farming, factories, and quarries, while Lust controls demon breeding, allowing players to build an army of demonic soldiers to fight for them. Harvesting souls of a particular sin gives synergy for specific tasks linked to the seven deadly sins, such as gluttons increasing the productivity of farms, sort of like a twisted version of Stardew Valleys Junimo helper. Permanent upgrades to these seven deadly sins between runs will help the next one go a little smoother, so players can't neglect this mechanic.
How Sin & Siege turns the premise of Hades 2 on its head
The ultimate goal of Sin and siege is not just to survive the onslaught of the Light Forces, but to rebuild Hell into a well-oiled machine of pain and suffering. Although both games place a heavy emphasis on the underworld of their respective mythologies, Sin and siege takes almost the opposite stance to Hell as Hades 2. IN Hades 2each of the Melinoes run into Tartarus to reach the House of Hades requires players to first defeat Hades 2 heads of each former region: Erebus, Oceanus, and the Sorrowful Fields.
On the contrary Sin and siege essentially puts players in the role of these regional bosses, with the different circles of Hell acting as different regions they must defend. The action game of Hades 2 can be a drastic departure from the city builder and tower defense game Sin and siegebut it is clear that the two roguelites mirror each other. For fans of Hades 2 who want to see what it would be like to play from the opposite perspective, Sin and siege might be worth keeping an eye on.
