GTA 6 will cost $70 according to Xbox Chat, but take that with a grain of salt

It's been nearly three years since Take-Two Interactive finally announced GTA 6, and there have been countless supposed leaks about the price tag, with concerns that it could sell for as much as $100, blowing right past the new $80 standard that Mario Kart World and Microsoft were trying to usher in. This weekend, the rumors continue after the Xbox Chat store reportedly told a customer for $9 6, but that Microsoft would sell the standard for $9. hardly confirmation, let alone a reputable source.

Xbox Chat is an AI-powered virtual assistant and is prone to mistakes, especially with information that has not been publicly confirmed. At most, CEO Strauss Zelnick has hinted that it won't be $100 in various interviews, but we're getting into speculation there. If this Xbox Chat screenshot is legit, which we'll get to in a moment, it will likely deduct the figure from the standard price of most other games it sells for. It's certainly not a “leak”.

Another problem with claims like these is that web-based messages like Xbox Chat can be easily manipulated with inspecting elements. So all screenshots should be taken with a grain of salt unless they are from a reputable source. But again, due to the fallible nature of AI assistants, it's unlikely that a reputable source would cite Xbox Chat as evidence. Nonetheless, I decided to ask the chatbot myself to see what it would say, and got the same stock response over and over again: “I'm sorry, but I don't have information on the price of Grand Theft Auto 6.”

We will likely find out the truth during the summer

Zelnick confirmed yet again this week that GTA 6 is on track to launch on November 19, with marketing to begin this summer, so pricing will no doubt be revealed soon. It could very well keep the standard $69.99 price that triple-A games rose to after the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, or it could go even higher to $80, as we saw with Mario Kart World, and as we almost saw with The Outer Worlds 2; we just don't know yet.

Either way, don't take this rumor as gospel. It's tempting to think that Xbox Chat may have accidentally leaked private information behind closed windows at Microsoft, but if the screenshot is real, then it's likely just an AI mistake, which if you've ever used the tools, or even just Googled a question in the last year or two, you'll be all too familiar with.
