How to locate and escape the collector squid Leviathan in Subnautica 2

Of all the things that scare me Subnautica 2, the huge giant squid Collector Leviathan may be at the top of the list. When I made it to the Alien Ruins for the first time, this monstrous sea creature charged at me at high speed and finished it off before I knew what was happening. Still, it's a fact that we all have to face this beast at some point in the game – and some may even seek out the creature. With this in mind, I'll show you where to find Collector Squid Leviathan in Subnautica 2.

Giant Squid Collector Leviathan Location Overview – Subnautica 2

  • The Collector Leviathan is a huge giant squid that stalks the trench beyond the high temperature water east of the Lifepod.

  • Use the tadpole Pens signal as a guide to reach the correct area. It is located approximately 700 meters east of the Lifepod. The building where the tadpole Pens survey took place overlooks the trench. Our first meeting happened when we first visited this place.

  • The tadpole provides some protection, but the goal here should be evasion and escape. If the Collector Leviathan gets hold of the tadpole, it can destroy it with very little effort. If it catches you outside of a vehicle, it's certain death.

  • The water near the Collector Leviathan is extremely hot, so you'll need to unlock the heat tolerance adaptation at the Corrupted Angel Comb.

Due to the speed required to avoid the Collector Leviathan, I highly recommend waiting until you get the Tadpole before even trying to reach the Collector Leviathan Giant Squid.

Go to warmer water:

To find the Collector Leviathan, you'll want to head to the Graveyard region, where the water is heated by underwater thermal vents. This is the area where you can find salt and sulfur in abundance.

When you reach the end of Subnautica 2s early episodes, you will receive a mission from NOA that will lead you to this area. When you receive the message that examine tadpole Pensdo you know that you have reached the right opportunity to go east.

Examine the tadpole pens:

If you've already unlocked the quest, but haven't visited yet, you'll see that the Tadpole Pens are about 700 meters from the Lifepod. If you look at the signal, you will notice that you can go almost due east. If you have a tadpole, the journey shouldn't take too long.

As you move further east, you will notice that the water begins to take on an orange, cloudy appearance. You will also notice that a temperature reading appears above the center of the screen, alerting you to the danger. This is where you must have Heat tolerance adaptation.

As you approach the Tadpole Pens building, you will be approximately 150m below the surface. If you don't have a tadpole, this is where you would begin to understand why you need one. Without a Rebreather you start to lose oxygen efficiency below 100 meters. This causes your oxygen to be used up much faster.

Cross on the seabed:

Once you reach the tadpole pens, the goal will be to cross the chasm and reach the Alien Ruins. While I won't say this is impossible to do without Froggyel, it seems like an incredibly unnecessary challenge.

Before doing anything, check if you can see Collector Leviathan.

With the tadpole, you will immediately want to drop off the cliff, flip the vehicle down, and descend to the lowest level of the ocean floor.

Stay as close to the bottom of the chasm as you can and make sure to avoid the crushing depth. You will be warned in good time if you are too low. Be sure to rise slowly, and stay as low as you can.

Very quickly you reach the opposite wall. Go up and you'll find yourself at the Alien Ruins.

  • Q: Can I kill or fight the Collector Squid Leviathan i Subnautica 2?
  • A: No! You absolutely cannot. It cannot be stopped. Its only goal is to kill you, so your only option is to dodge. There doesn't even seem to be a way to escape when the octopus wraps you in its tentacles.

There doesn't seem to be any treasure or hidden items to find, like you can on the Great Jaw Clam Leviathan. The only treasure here is to get to the other side alive.
