Magic: The Gathering has some weird naming conventions, and another has reared its head with the new Foundations Commander decks. These upcoming precons are aimed at new players, hence the Foundation's name, but this clashes with the name of Foundation's set, which is made even more confusing by the fact that they're being released as part of Reality Fracture!
Now that we've got that out of the way, it's time to take a look at who these new Commander precons are designed for, and whether they might be worth picking up even if you have little MTG experience.
What are Foundation Commander Decks?
Foundations Commander Deck represents a new, friendlier way to start playing Commander as opposed to having to pick a set-themed precon that will use at least two mana colors and a range of mechanics.
Although these cards are released on the same day as Reality Fracture, October 2, 2026, they are not yet listed on the Reality Fracture landing page on the official WotC website.
These new tires are monochromatic and focus on keeping game strategies simple. They're relatively cheap at only $30 per deck, or you can buy all five for $150, so we don't expect there to be much value in the way of cards or reprints, but instead expect them to draw mostly from the Foundations set released in 2024.
The five decks that make up this set are:
- Calling All Angels (white)
- Bad Rank (Black)
- Reign of Dragons (red)
- Keen Engineering (Blue)
- Tramplesaurus Rex (Green)
Despite an expected lack of power, these decks still need to be competitive if used against other precons, then they will likely contain lots of impactful cards, just not with as much depth given the limitations of only one mana pool to draw from.
If the decks are too weak, anyone using them will get trampled when playing against other players, especially those using higher console commanders, so it's hard to find the right balance with this product.

We take a look at the very best MTG precon decks for the Commander format.
Who are Foundations Commander Decks for?
It's quite obvious that the Foundations Commander decks are for players new to Commander and Magic: The Gathering in general. While precons are also a great way to get new players into the game, they can still be quite intimidating and require a certain level of awareness and familiarity with the game.
The use of just a color of mana and the simple strategiesmost of which seem very aggressive at face value, all leaning towards these decks being perfect for new players.
We've seen annual precons released under a generic Commander or Commander Legends banner before, but they haven't been quite as stripped down as these.
However, we assume these decks are also good for experienced players who may have trouble upgrading complex preconsor build your own decks from scratch. These Foundations decks serve as a good base to build on and act as a guide for players to start testing mana and mechanic synergies, and this can lead to a better understanding of deck building when it comes time to craft a brand new deck.
