Mario Movie Peach Backstory is now Canon to the games

Mario games aren't exactly story-heavy. A plumber who eats mushrooms to get big stomps on a bunch of goombas until he reaches a castle and throws Bowser into lava or sometimes the sun. The end. If you're looking for character motivation and meaningful relationships, you'll have to settle for Daisy turning into an elephant.

That's not exactly perfect for a movie, so the new Illumination movies have expanded each character's personality and background to give them some depth (well, as much as you can in a movie that dangles the keys for two hours). One of the most interesting revelations to come out of that change in approach is that Peach and Rosalina are actually sisters, something that was finally confirmed after decades of speculation in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

“I would like to stick with the backstory that was established in the movie”

Rosalina reads to a Luma in the movie Super Mario Galaxy.

Submitters who've written fanfic about Rosalina and Peach smooching behind the castle or drawn artwork of the couple locking lips can shout, “The movies are their own thing! They're not sisters in the games!” Sorry to burst your bubble, but according to Shigeru Miyamoto, they are.

“Since we don't always know what kind of game we're going to make next, having too many character backgrounds can end up limiting us,” Miyamoto said (via Nintendo Dream Web, translated by machine learning). “I'm fine with being bound by the game, but I didn't want to be limited by a story we created – that's why we'd avoided making movies for so many years.

“Until we made this movie, we hadn't decided on Peach's origin,” he continued. “But now that we've made the movie, it's been fun expanding the character in different ways. So I'd like to stick with the backstory established in the movie as much as possible in future games.”

There's no point trying to decipher what's canon for the Mario games (if you think Zelda's timeline is confusing, yes), but at least we know that Rosalina and Peach are now sisters. Ergo, it might be time to hang up the fan-fic and fan-art of them as a couple. In retrospect, it's a bit strange.
