No Man's Sky Player shares ideas that can take base building to the next level

No Man's Sky players want to take base building to another level, asking Hello Games to integrate customizable space stations into the interstellar survival game's mind-blowing universe. Base building in No Man's Sky has already come on leaps and bounds from where it started nearly 10 years ago, and being able to set up your own custom space stations is a direction the game could be heading in the future.

When it was first released in August 2016, No Man's Sky was widely perceived as a game with high ambitions that failed to deliver on its promises. Although the game supported more than 18.4 quintillion planets for players to discover and explore, there wasn't much to do on them initially. However, regular free updates throughout the game's lifespan have added a wide variety of content, with improved base building i No Man's Sky is one of the development team's first post-launch priorities, sparking one of the biggest success stories in modern gaming.

There are almost endless planets in No Man's Sky to explore, and a player's base fits perfectly into the aesthetic of one of these worlds.

No Man's Sky players require customizable space stations

Approaching its 10th anniversary, No Man's Skys fan base is now requesting the possibility of building similar bases throughout the universe that are not tied to individual planets. A recent post on Reddit by user awacate_gamerYT has gotten a lot of attention with its suggestion of customizable space stations, an idea that many fans of the game seem to support. According to this particular player's proposal, these space stations would follow several of the conventional rules for land-based base building, but they would also incorporate some features of No Man's Skys settlements, such as supporting large NPC populations in housing and enabling external ships to visit.

Players already have a variety of options for creating custom spaces throughout the universe. One of the earliest additions that met these criteria was the addition of No Man's Skys freighters, massive ships that support hangar bays, storage facilities, teleporters and other amenities, and with interiors almost as customizable as planet-bound bases. However, while freighters provide a hub that can travel between star systems, their early addition to the game means they don't benefit from any more modern features that have been added No Man's Sky.

This latest post is far from the first time players have requested the ability to build their own custom space stations, and the frequency with which these requests appear just goes to show how in demand space stations are as a feature. Some have speculated that the demand could lead them to be included in a 10th anniversary update in August, and several fans have invoked No Man's Sky creator Sean Murray with his wishes. Murray has used player feedback as a guiding force in many No Man's Skys content updates in the past, and he's probably well aware of how other players have requested space stations.

No Man's Sky also seems to have found an unlikely competitor for players' attention in Bethesda's Starfield. Although that game is much heavier on RPG elements, both share similar concepts, such as the exploration of many planets and the cataloging of alien life forms. No Man's SkyVoyager's August 2025 update drew many comparisons to Starfield's custom ship building system, which lets players place modules and parts down a grid to make their own Corvette ships with transverse, interactive interiors. Starfields big Free Lanes update, released on April 7th, also added a bunch of new features, including the Asteroid Manor space station that can be claimed, and while it's not fully customizable, Hello Games might want to get ahead of the competition by meeting their players' demands for unique space stations.
