What initially started as some unverifiable rumors specific to the European market has now become a global reality, as Sony has officially announced that its PlayStation 5 console will receive another price increase. These worldwide price increases, which take effect on April 2, will affect the base PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, as well as the PlayStation Portal handheld.
The Pro is arguably the console hardest hit by the new prices, which are attributed to “pressures in the global economic landscape,” which range from $899.99 in the US before any taxes. It was $699.99 at launch, with the price hikes representing a $200 increase in less than two years.
Ghost Of Yotei is proof that big PlayStation exclusives just don't matter
Is Triple-A greatness really what we're after in video games anymore?
Now, players around the world are scrambling to find out if an upgrade is feasible in less than four days. For its part, video game retailer GameStop is trying to make that decision easier by encouraging upgrades to the PS5 Pro ahead of its planned price hike.
GameStop is many things, but you might want to take advantage of the offer
Taking to social media, GameStop revealed that they are offering “extra credit” nationwide on all hardware. The offer, which will run through April 4, is meant to help games “beat the change and upgrade for less.”
Then, in a follow-up post, the retailer noted that gamers can pick up a PS5 Pro for “just” $349 after trading in their base PS5 console, which is eligible for up to $400 in trade-in credit.
As it stands, the trade-in prices for “Pro” memberships for PS5 consoles are as follows:
-
Original PS5 with disc drive: $346.50
-
Original PS5 Digital Edition: $330
-
PS5 Slim Edition with disc drive: $376.75
-
PS5 Slim Digital Edition: $357.50
That's before what appears to be an additional $25 trade-in bonus for consoles, bringing the Slim Edition with a disc drive to $400. Depending on when someone bought the console, it could be equivalent to getting their money back.
As with all trades at GameStop, it is dependent on the condition of the console, along with the need to have all the components that came inside the box available at the time of the trade-in (controller, HDMI cable, power cable, console, console feet). Still, if everything is right, there may not be a better deal for a long time, or ever.
