Crunchyroll is officially removing the Legendary Shonen Series Hunter x Hunter

Hunter X Hunter is an iconic manga series that received its first anime adaptation in 1999. Over a decade later, in 2011, it received another much more popular anime adaptation by Studio Madhouse. This anime has proven to be a fan favorite. Unfortunately, it's leaving Crunchyroll's streaming service today, much to the dismay of many fans.

Reason Hunter x Hunter left the streaming platform

Earlier today, it was announced that one of the biggest anime series of all time, Hunter x Hunter, would be leaving the biggest streaming platform in the entire world, Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll has hosted the Hunter X Hunter series for quite a few years now so this has definitely upset many fans of the franchise. The removal of Hunter X Hunter from Crunchyroll comes as a surprise that has many wondering why this even happened in the first place.

Most likely, the reason for that Hunter X Hunter is leaving Crunchyroll due to their license agreement expiring. For some reason, Crunchyroll has decided not to renew the license, which means Hunter X Hunter has to leave their platform. Whether or not Crunchyroll will ever renew this licensing contract remains to be seen, but for now, fans will have to find another streaming service to watch this fan-favorite anime.

The alternative homes for streaming Togashi's masterpieces

With Hunter x Hunter leaving the Crunchyroll platform, fans are naturally wondering where they can find this legendary series to watch legally instead. Currently, there are only two other major streaming platforms where the Hunter x Hunter series is available. The first is Netflix, where all Hunter x Hunter episodes are currently hosted. The other option is to use Hulu, another major streaming service that hosts this anime.

Of course, streaming services aren't the only place fans can watch the series. Buying Blu-rays is also an option for those who want to keep the Hunter x Hunter series with them forever. With such a purchase, fans will never again have to worry about streaming platforms removing the series from their libraries.

Assessing the possibility of a dark continent adaptation

Anime for Dark Continent Adaptation

As is clear, the Hunter x Hunter anime ended in 2014, and over ten years later, its anime return is highly anticipated. While the Hunter x Hunter anime technically ended, the story is far from over. Since the end of the anime, the manga has made great progress, but unfortunately, not even a single arc has been fully completed since 2014 in the manga. This means that the adaptation of the next story arc, the Succession Contest arc, which kicked off the expedition to the Dark Continent, is unlikely to happen anytime soon. If this arc is going to be adapted into the anime, Togashi will have to finish it first in the manga, which could at least take a few more years.

The HxH anime had to end without a proper ending due to issues with the manga. The creator of Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi, is facing many health problems. As such, the plot of Hunter x Hunter has taken a big hit. Getting as few as 10 chapters each year would be considered a blessing, as there is no consistent release schedule. Due to all the problems, Togashi has not been able to finish any arcs since the Chairman's League arc ended.

That said, Togashi is really making great strides at the moment. He's almost done with a new batch of Hunter x Hunter chapters, and this new batch might be the biggest fans have had in the last decade, reportedly around 20 chapters. The release date is currently unknown, but it is expected for them to drop sometime in 2026. While progress is slow, the story is moving forward, and in the next four years or so, fans may see the Succession Contest arc finally come to an end, which may then be followed by the return of the anime.

Hunter x Hunter is currently available to watch in its entirety on Hulu and Netflix.
