Most Unfair Final Fantasy Bosses, Ranked

This is not a definitive list of the hardest bosses in Final Fantasy history, because it would make things look a little different. Instead, the goal is to look for bosses that have unfair advantages over players, which can result in a literal hard boss that is challenging because they have high HP or have incredibly powerful attacks.

Final Fantasy: 8 Gameplay Systems That Changed the Series Forever

These Final Fantasy mechanics helped shape some of the biggest entries and left a lasting impact on the series as a whole.

This could also mean that the boss is just annoying to fight due to some mechanics that make the fight drag on. These bosses will be ranked accordingly, from annoying to deal with to just plain hard.

There will be spoilers for anyone who cares about boss appearances or tactics.

Rubicante

Who is he, Dracula?

Rubicante is one of the four fiends Final Fantasy 4which are like the elite super bosses that appear during the story. In the SNES version, the first fight should seemingly be easy, as he is weak to ice. The problem is that he will absorb all magic if his cape is up, which he can quickly switch between. This means that if players have a character like Rydia cast Ice, but before her spell casts, Rubicante raises her cape, players will be hit with a counterattack.

The frequency and randomness of his blocking are difficult to predict, leading to an unpredictable battle that will have players constantly questioning whether they are choosing actions that will be harmful or fruitful. With careful tactics it's not impossible, just annoying as a boss Final Fantasy 4. This fight plays out mostly the same in all versions, with the DS remake having a more cinematic feel to the fight.

7

Wrexsoul

The plot to wait

Wrexsoul is an optional boss, but is mandatory if players want to get all party members in the second half of Final Fantasy 6. In this case, the boss is in Cyan's dream, and it has the annoying tendency to jump into a random character. In this state, the possessed character will not be in danger, and players cannot attack Wrexsoul.

Two minions can be attacked and killed in the meantime, but they are often revived, and when the Wrexsoul decides to leave its host temporarily, its minions can heal it as well. It's a prolonged battle that isn't difficult as much because it only takes a long time to finish if Wrexsoul keeps playing the disappearing act.

6

Ultimecia

A roll of the dice

Ultimecia is the final boss of Final Fantasy 8which, like many final bosses in the series, has multiple phases. In the grand scheme of final bosses, this trial isn't all that difficult, but it's annoying on a deeply unfair level. When players start the battle, Ultimecia will randomly choose the three party members she wants to face. So, if all party members aren't fully prepared, players can get boned pretty quickly.

8 Perfect Final Fantasy Fan Games

These Final FAN-tasy games are worth a look and showcase some of the best the community has done in honor of the franchise.

If characters die before they can be revived, they will be permanently cycled out and lost over time, waiting to be replaced by someone else. Players could game the system by getting rid of a bad party member they didn't prepare properly, or they could just monotonously keep resetting the game and hope for a better draw.

5

Yunalesca

Because this is thriller

Yunalesca is one of the managers in Final Fantasy 10which appears towards the latter half of the story. One of her most devastating attacks will give the party Zombie status, complicating battles. Zombie, unlike other ailments, will not harm the character at all. Characters will take damage normally, but the catch is that they can't be healed because healing spells and items will damage a Zombie-afflicted character instead.

It's easy to heal with an item, but it can waste a turn when the character needs to be healed right away or they could die in the next turn, so it's like a catch twenty two. Yunalesca is far from the hardest boss in the game, but this extra step of using items and magic to heal just lengthens the whole match.

4

Adamantois

Taking Turtle Mountain

Adamantoise is one of the biggest bosses to ever appear in one Final Fantasy the game, and specifically, it's included Final Fantasy 15. Normally, Adamantoise will appear as either large or small random turtle enemies, but in this case it's as big as a mountain and might as well be an MMO boss. The reason is that it takes a VERY long time to kill it.

Adamantoise, then, isn't so much difficult as it is just incredibly mind-numbingly slow to take down, and if players die, they'll immediately lose the will to try again. The beast seemed like a test run for the giant Eikon battles in the Final Fantasy 16so maybe if Noctis could literally turn into a Summon like Ramuh, things would have been cooler for this fight.

3

Ozma

Show me what you got!

Ozma is an optional boss in Final Fantasy 9and one of the hardest to find in the entire franchise as it requires a large quest. Players must fully level up Choco through the Chocobo minigame, and once they get to the floating islands, there is a space where Ozma awaits as a large, colorful sphere.

8 Final Fantasy Characters Who Start Out Weak But Become Powerhouses

These Final Fantasy characters start out frustratingly useless in battle, but their power will surprise you as the credits roll.

Ozma is impervious to most attacks and has a variety of spells in return that can KO the party instantly, such as Curse, Doomsday, Holy, LV5 Death, and Meteor. Also, it can fully heal itself whenever it wants to. There are ways to prepare the four chosen party members to be more prepared during combat, and ultimately it's a dice roll whether Ozma will use any of her more devastating attacks more than once. It just takes a little patience, that's all.

2

Wiegraf/Belias

A Small Map With Overpowered Baddies

Final Fantasy Tactics has some of the hardest battles, boss or otherwise, on average for the entire series. The big bosses in this game are humans who turn into monsters with the help of special stones assigned to the Zodiac called Lucavi. In the second Lucavi battle, Ramza only has to fight a knight named Wiegraf, which is challenging enough.

Then, in the second phase, Wiegraf will transform into Belias and summon demon assistants, which is when players can also summon party members. However, Belias is unbearably strong, his demon minions are also overpowered, and the map is very small, leaving little room to gain an advantage. It's a fight that players have to grind to prepare for, and when they think they're ready, they won't be, so they should grind some more.

1

Ruby weapon

Unfair on every level

Ruby Weapon is an optional boss in Final Fantasy 7and arguably the hardest boss in the game, considering all forms of Sephiroth as well. What makes this boss tricky is that it can permanently remove a character from the battle. Even if players have all three party members with the best settings and equipment, if they lose a character, it disrupts the flow of battle.

It unnecessarily complicates the battle on top of Ruby Weapon with high damage numbers. Even the most dedicated Final Fantasy 7 fans couldn't beat this boss until the remastered version of the game came out, giving players cheats. It is as unfair and difficult as a boss, and even its other half, the Emerald Weapon, is not as difficult.
