Pokemon Pokopia is full of ways to get creative with your environmental restoration and building projects, but customization goes beyond just throwing down blocks. Besides being able to destroy and rebuild anything you want, you can also make paint, which can then be used to customize a number of things in the game.
That said, you won't be able to paint right away, and even when you can, you might not be able to do anything with it until you make some more progress in the game's story. This is because you have to enlist the help of a very special Pokemon, Smearguru, to help you paint things and make paint balloons.
How to make paint
If you've tried feeding Onix berries, you've probably noticed an additional option ask Onix to make you some paint instead. When you first see it, you probably have no idea what it's for, but as long as you have berries to spare, you can make some anyway. For every berry you hand over, you get five bowls of paint in return.
When your environment level “Palette Town” reaches level 5, you actually start unlocking the ability to buy paint from the shop there without having to ask Pokemon to do it for you. That said, you may need to discover each color yourself first, at least once. Palette Town is the original name of the town across the long bridge in the Withered Wasteland, where GameShare is available.
You can change as many as you want at once, though it takes longer for the Pokemon to crush them all, depending on how many you hand over. Speaking of smashing things, Onix isn't the only Pokemon that can do this to you. Any Pokemon that has the Crush Ability can prepare colors for you.
Some of the earliest to be able to use Crush are:
-
Onyx
-
Bastiodon
-
Pawmo
-
Geodude
So when you want to paint, you just have to do it select “Watch this!” while talking to one of these Pokémon and then present them with a berry. From there, select “Make me some paint” and you will be able to select the amount you want to change. Once they get to work, let them be, and they will track you or alert you when everything is done.
How to make each color
As you would expect, each type of berry results in different paint colors. Here's how to make every base color in the game:
|
Paint Color |
Carry needed |
|---|---|
|
RED |
Lip Berry |
|
Yellow |
Asper Berry |
|
Pink color |
Pecha Berry |
|
Cyan color |
Raw Berry |
|
Blue |
Chesto Berry |
|
Green color |
Lum Berry |
Unfortunately, the two remaining base colors, black and white, cannot be consistently made with a berry. Instead, they are randomly given as a bonus when you make other colors. For example, handing over Aspear berries can result in getting 5x Yellow Paint and 5x Black Paint.
So the best way to stock up on these colors seems to be to either do paint often or level up Palette Town so you can buy them instead. In addition, the berries you have access to are randomly assigned to your islandlike Animal Crossing, so to access the others you have to search Dream Islands and shop at the Pokemon Center or any cash trading station.
To make the remaining colors, such as brown, beige or rose, you must combine base colors. You can do this yourself by making paint balloons, or by choosing one of these colors when you have Smearguru paint something for you.

How to use paint and craft paint balloons
Once you've made paint, you need to take another step to actually use it. First you have to make enough progress in the Withered Wasteland to open the gate to Bleak Beach. When you arrive at Bleak Beach, go to the southern part of the area to find Smeargurua slightly more artistic looking Smeargle.
Smearguru will let you perform a few tasks for it, including bringing it paint and letting it paint something for you. After completing some of its tasks, it will teach you how to make paint balloons. If you want to paint something individually, you can bring it to Smearguru, but if you want the ability to paint yourself, you need to use Balloons.
When you have the ability to make paint balloons, all you need to do is go to a crafting station. You will see that you now have the option to create color balloon in any color, as long as you have the color required to make it. After making a paint balloon is all you need to do approach a paintable item while wearing it, then throw it at the item.
The item will not be selectedso it can be a bit difficult to make sure you paint the object you intend to make. Its it is recommended that you do not have anything else around the object you intend to paintso you don't accidentally paint something else.
In addition to painting with traditional colors, you can also apply patterns to certain objects with Smearguru. If the item has a pattern option, you will see it listed in the color selection menu. This is also where you'll see the option to paint separate parts of an item different colors, if available.
What objects can be painted
With all that said, you're ready to paint, but again, remember that not everything can be painted. Almost all building blocks, except for a few, can be painted, but for furniture it will be limited to specific items. The only way to tell without trying is to check the brush icon in the crafting or shopping menu.
If you see the icon, the item can be painted; if not, it's only available in the color you see. In the shopping menu on the PC, the icon will be next to the individual item on the listbut in the crafting menu you will see the brush icon listed in the description under the object's name.
