With the official unveiling of Pokemon winds and waves on Pokemon Day 2026, fans finally got their first look at the Gen 10 world and its starters, which include a bird-like bird, a Pomeranian dog, and a gecko. As always, starter Pokémon play a crucial role in setting the tone for a region's adventure, if not intertwined with the setting, and Pokemon winds and waves is likely not the exception. What's particularly fascinating is how the design and art style of these new Pokemon make them feel like they can transition into Palworldthe open monster collection game known for its whimsical but slightly darker aesthetic and themes.
Palworld have built a reputation for giving creatures personality, charm and, sometimes, a mischievous edge. This has not come without its price, as many have seen similarities to Pokemon in Palworlds Pal designer. While Pokémon traditionally leans more towards stylized, polished and universally appealing designs, with many animals specially created to be your friends, Winds and waves' beginners seem to find a middle ground. Their detailed textures, expressive faces, and dynamic motion animations blur the line between the two universes to the point that Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua almost feel like Pals.

Game Freak is following up on the Pokemon Winds and Waves announcement with some more details on the starting monsters in the upcoming RPG games.
Pokémon and Palworld's design philosophy explained
Pokémon Newbies like Browt, Pombon and Gecqua rely on clear silhouettes, expressive gestures and elemental cues, like Browt's lush unbrow, Pombon's Pomeranian-inspired fluff and fire Kanji on paw, and Gecqua's elegant pose reminiscent of moving water, to instantly communicate character. Similar, Palworld pals like Prunelia and Splatterina use vibrant color accents, distinct shapes, and exaggerated limbs to make their roles and elemental traits more recognizable in the open world. In both franchises, these design choices often make creatures feel alive and visually engaging, whether in combat or exploration.

However, Palworld often emphasizes more semi-realistic textures and anatomy compared to Pokémons stylized charm. For example, Verdash has lush details that respond to movement, and Kingpaca's fur exhibits shading and volume that gives a sense of tangible weight. On the contrary Pokémon beginners maintain simpler textures and smoother surfaces, such as Browt's unbrow blade or Gecqua's glossy blue skin, prioritizing legibility over realistic detail. While Pokémon sometimes exaggerates proportions and expressions, Palworld's Pal designs are often based on one or two details that make up the animal's core appearance and personality, such as the large mushroom cap on Shroomer's head.
Why Pokémon Winds and Waves starters look like buddies
Browt is a small bird with a leaf-shaped unibrow and a slightly angry expression, to the point that it has been jokingly compared to Angry Birds characters. Palworld's Robinquill is a bird-like Pal with feathery green accents resembling a hood, which feels similar to Browt's leafy forehead. Ironically, Robinquill has been heavily compared to Decidueye, which is the final evolution of a starter Pokemon that looks a bit like Browt, and that is Rowlett.
Pombon resembles a Pomeranian, with soft red accents and a fluffy body, giving it a warm, approachable look. Palworld's Flambelle has a bright orange and red color, a small body and a cute, expressive face, all similar to Pombo in Pokemon winds and waves. On the other side stands Kingpaca, a larger, warm-toned quadruped with playful proportions, reflecting Pombon's friendly and fuzzy aesthetic.
Gecqua is a blue gecko with purple eyes and graceful, geisha-like movements. Its pose, eyes and almost mischievous grin are quite similar to Daedream i Palworld. Yet the Pokémon also resembles Azurobe, with its elongated, flexible body and poised stance, echoing Gecqua's elegance and expressive movements.
Pokemon Winds and Waves' Gecqua is currently believed to be evolving into a water/psychic hybrid by some fans, which would make its concept possibly even closer to Daedream.
Why the visual comparisons work
-
Distinct Shapes and Textures: Browt's leafy eyebrows, Pombon's fluffy body, and Gecqua's smooth scales are visually aligned with Palworlds creature designer.
-
Attitude and Posture: Energetic, friendly or poised body language reflects the expressiveness of several friends in Palworld. Some Pals' appearance is a dead giveaway of its type, often enhanced by the animal's movements.
-
Color and details: Green, red/orange and blue palettes reinforce elemental and visual parallels, which Palworld also uses. The facial expressions for each starter i Pokemon winds and waves is very Pal-like compared to other starters in previous games.
