Most of the bosses in the early game fight in God of War: Sons of Sparta are relatively simple, with brute force and the occasional dodge roll, usually enough for Kratos to overcome his enemies. But that all changes with the Alastor boss fight in the Oenus Vineyard area.
The Hardest Bosses In God Of War
The God of War series can be challenging at times, especially with bosses. Here are some of the strongest in the franchise.
Players will find a statue of Alastor shortly after their arrival at the vineyard, but it isn't until after they destroy the four ominous fountains that the conflict demon comes to life. When he does, defeat Alastor in God of War: Sons of Sparta is anything but simple.
How to beat Alastor in God of War: Sons of Sparta
The Alastor boss fight is split into three phases, all of which see him summon several of the red orbs Kratos encountered while destroying the fountains. As before, they will periodically shoot yellow homing projectiles at Kratos, so it's a good idea to focus on taking out the red orbs as quickly as possible.
During the first phase of the fight, Alastor will fly to the side of the screen and fire a wave of projectiles at Kratos and Demios. While these can be avoided or parried, it's best to just block the projectiles as they fly by. After firing projectiles from both sides of the screen, Alastor will land on the ground, at which point you can dish out some decent damage. This cycle repeats until the second phase of the fight.
If you stand directly on top of Alastor's sprite, his whip attack won't connect, so position yourself carefully and then go to town.
Phase 2 starts when Alastor's health drops to about 60% and begins with him flying up into the center of the screen and firing a barrage of red projectiles. While doing this, stand directly under Alastor and spam the block buttonand Kratos should parry most of these projectiles without taking too much damage. When the projectiles stop, you can get to work destroying the red orbs.
Just like in the first phase, Alastor will move to one side of the screen and fire arrow-like projectiles at Kratos. The attack will last longer this time and will cover the full width of the screen twice, but it can again be blocked or parried fairly easily without causing too much damage. Unfortunately, however, the same cannot be said for Alastor's Blood Fists, which he will summon right before the arrow projectile attack.
After using his projectile attack, Alastor will once again move to one side of the screen, but this time he will summon bloody fists that fly horizontally or vertically across the screen. Blood fists can't be blocked or parried and deal tons of damage if they connectso you have to be on your guard while he uses this attack.
The best strategy to avoid the blood fists is to stand on the lowest part of the screen. For the fists that drop from the ceiling, you can just move left and right as needed. For the ones that move from left to right, you might be tempted to try to skip them, but there's a much easier way. Instead of going over, you should dodge roll straight into the bloody fists.
It may seem counterintuitive, but the game is very generous with its i-frames, so as long as you start your role within a second or so of passing the blood fists, you won't take any damage.
Periodically, you have chances to waste on Alastor's health bar. We recommend that you use your damage dealing tools herewhere the blue bar allows. Evergereen Flame can take out a large portion of Alastor's health bar, so make the most of it while you can. Believe it or not, things somehow manage to get even more difficult when Alastor drops to 25% health and the third and final phase of the boss fight begins.
In phase 3 there are four red orbs instead of the usual two. You probably won't be able to destroy them all at once, so aim to take out two red orbs per cycle. The last thing you want is to be distracted and get hit by a couple of blood fists. If you take damage, remember to take a sip from your Olpe of Wellness, but make sure you only do so between attacks.
Alastor gains no new moves during Phase 3, but the frequency with which he attacks is noticeably faster. He spends much less time standing still as well, so the opportunities to do damage are limited. The best times to attack Alastor are right before he starts calling blood fists and right after he uses one of his projectile attacks. These windows are still pretty short, but they should be just long enough to lower his health bar a little more each time.
Alastor Boss Fight Rewards
Eventually, Alastor will run out of health and become stumlocked, at which point you'll be prompted to press the triangle button to destroy his inventory. Doing so will end the boss fight and you will be awarded both Platinum Laurel objects and the Bathed in Blood Trophy. The former can be traded for Kerkopes, while the latter is one of 35 trophies needed to unlock God of War: Sons of Sparta platinum trophy.
