“When I watched the gameplay trailer, I just felt like I was tearing up,” said Molyneux of The Fable reboot's first look. “I'm someone who cries a lot,” Molyneux admitted, “and I felt incredibly emotional, and the reason I felt emotional was: … This thing that we created, it's going to live, it's going to go on.” Molyneux went on to praise the new title's decision to create a complete reboot of Fable franchise, rather than trying to continue the story of the original trilogy, although he expressed appreciation for the game's callbacks to its predecessors, saying “I loved seeing some of those references.”
While Molyneux was largely complementary to the comprehensive Fable gameplay features on display, he shared some of his more critical thoughts, admitting that the game's aesthetics “felt a bit antiseptic” to him. “I never thought about Fable like being clean and that all the angles are sharp and defined,” Molyneux said of the game's look. “It's more chaotic.” Despite this minor complaint, he acknowledged that the developers would have “months and months” to add the characteristic grit and grime that he associates with the series. He also makes it clear that he's not looking forward to playing the game so much as not looking forward to playing the title, but as “someone who really loves and adores' the universe Fable game.
With the franchise stepping into the modern era for the first time, Fables opportunity to fully realize its potential has never been clearer. While many long-time players have fond memories of Fables original trilogy, it cannot be denied that some of the original premise of the game, and many of the promises made by Peter Molyneux himself, were not fully fulfilled at the time. Despite this, the franchise has become one of Xbox's most beloved series, and arguably stands as a truly unique icon of Western RPGs. In today's gaming landscape, some of the most ambitious and unlikely concepts have come to life in ways that would have been impossible generations before. If Fable can accomplish everything it sets out to do, it can solidify itself as yet another milestone in gaming history.
