The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is one of the most successful indie games of all time, with over seven million copies sold on PC alone, but Mewgenics is shaping up to take Moriah's crown.
Last night, on a Wednesday night, Mewgenics set a new peak player count of 83,956 on Steam, surpassing The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which peaked at 70,701 players five years ago.
The original Flash-based Binding of Isaac peaked at 12,575 over 12 years ago.
That's the highest number of players of any Edmund McMillen game to date, though that's hardly surprising when Mewgenics has already recouped its seven-year development cost in just three hours and sold over 500,000 copies in less than two days.

Mewgenics isn't slowing down either, and as the weekend approaches – coupled with its massive popularity on YouTube and Twitch, ranked as the #9 category ahead of Fortnite and IRL – we'll no doubt see the number of top players skyrocket even higher.
Mewgenics was the #18 most played Steam game in the last 24 hours
In terms of the overall Steam charts, Mewgenics has crept into the top 20 games played in the last 24 hours, beating out Naraka: Bladepoint, Dead by Daylight, War Thunder, Geometry Dash, GTA 5 and Nioh 3 for the honor, ranking just behind Deadlock and Stardew Valley.
“I'm told that now that we passed Vampire Survivor's peak, the only roguelike/lite with more peak concurrent players than us is Hades 2,” said Mewgenics co-creator Glaiel. “Looking forward to the weekend (although this seems like a very tough boss)”.
