A new report claims the long-rumored Assassin's Creed multiplayer games that were in development have been scrapped. Although there is still hope for the future Assassin's Creed multiplayer project, this news may come as a disappointment to those who were waiting for a modern one AC games with a multiplayer component.
Multiplayer was introduced to Assassin's Creed franchise with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood back in 2010, and variants of it were offered in the following games such as Revelations, Black flagand Unit. Beyond Good and Evil 2 Director Issues Statement After Wave of Ubisoft Cancellations
Beyond Good & Evil 2 survives Ubisoft's latest game-set, with its creative director expressing both relief and sadness.
Assassin's Creed League is shutting down
It has been revealed that an upcoming Assassin's Creed Project that would have seen four assassins unite in feudal Japan has been cancelled. The news came via French site Origami, which claims to have verified the report with half a dozen Ubisoft employees. Called Assassin's Creed Leaguethe project was initially intended to serve as DLC for the latest entry, Assassin's Creed Shadowsand would even have produced some of the content that comes in the season pass for the game. However, going beyond simple DLC, Assassin's Creed League would have created a new baseline that future Assassin's Creed game would use, reintroducing multiplayer to the franchise's future entries.
In the end, it seems the developer felt the project was taking too long and it was patched Assassin's Creed Shadows wouldn't make much sense. However, the project wasn't completely scrapped at the time, with plans to spin it off as a small standalone multiplayer game that would likely have used assets from Assassin's Creed Shadows. An alpha of the multiplayer game wasn't expected to be available until May 2026. That, too, has now been scrapped, with the cancellation apparently coming as a surprise to Ubisoft Annecy executives, who only got the news themselves a week before this report.
All is not necessarily lost for Assassin's Creed Multiplayer Future
Even if this means the end of the chance Assassin's Creed Shadows receives an official multiplayer mode, there is still a small hope that the future of the series could see multiplayer again one day. Some of the team members who worked on the project have reportedly seen their duties changed to take what was accomplished with AC League project back into Ubisoft's proprietary Anvil game engine. This could open the door for multiplayer to be more easily introduced in the future AC game, and at least that means all the work put into the project hasn't been completely lost.

Fans of Assassin's Creed franchise still has some hope that the rumors Assassin's Creed Black Flag resynca remake of the original game, is in the works. Although not confirmed by Ubisoft, the rumor has been around for quite some time, and Ubisoft teased fans by acknowledging the rumors with a meme response on Twitter.
But there has also been a lot of turmoil at Ubisoft recently. It has been revealed that many projects have been canceled or otherwise shut down by Ubisoft this year. In the first month of 2026 alone, it was confirmed that Ubisoft had canceled Prince of Persia remake, and Watch Dogs games are apparently dead in the water, even though the franchise's film adaptation is still ongoing. Ubisoft also plans to close several game development studios under its umbrella over the next three years. At this point, expectant fans may want to take any rumors with a grain of salt, as even if they're true, there's no guarantee that rumored games will actually reach players, as the gaming industry as a whole seems to continue to see turbulent times after years of layoffs, shutdowns, and restructuring.
