Playground Games founder and general manager Ralph Fulton has confirmed that the studio is coming Fable the game will allow players to romance 1,000 NPCs in the game, with very few exceptions. This Fable the tidbit will come as good news to players who love to engage in the romantic elements of these types of RPGs.
Romance has always been an important part of the past Fable game. In the mainline games, players can woo NPCs by improving their perception of the hero. Players would need to find out important characteristics of each NPC, such as what kind of gifts they like to receive, and act accordingly to initiate a relationship. This could lead to marriages, where players could buy property for their spouses to live in. A marriage that didn't go well could even lead to divorce. In previous titles, most NPCs the player met on the street could be married, which sounds great in theory, but can lead to a lack of depth. This is contrary to how most RPGs do romance these days, with in-depth stories that really lead to an emotional connection with players. However, these broad mechanics have remained very similar since the start of the series, and Fable looks to continue the tradition.
Fable can dodge a bullet with its name on it
Recent news suggests that Fable's release targets may be in for a shakeup, but it could ultimately be beneficial for the long-awaited RPG.
Fable lets you marry pretty much anyone
Talking to the following IGN FableAppearing at the recent Xbox Developer Direct, Playground founder Ralph Fulton said of the game's characters: “There's 1,000 of them in the game. You can go and talk to every single one of them in fully voiced conversations. You can get married, it's a bit of work, but you can marry them all. You can have kids with them, you can also hire them, you can also act as fun as they are. this kind of Greek chorus, if you will, that reflects your choices and your morale back to you So when you walk around, it's not a classic Fable, talking about you on the street and telling them what they think of you too, but it's a good way to track how popular your decisions have been.
Fulton also confirmed that all of these NPCs are handcrafted, so players won't be marrying characters who simply don't have the human touch. He mentioned that “maybe we once thought we could procedurally generate them, but we abandoned that idea quite a while ago… it's important for the player that they can get to know unique created NPCs.” With having so many characters for players to marry, Fable is completely in line with the rest of the series. However, this may raise some concerns about the lack of depth. For obvious reasons, Playground Games won't be able to create romance stories for 1,000 NPCs – it's just not feasible. There may be concerns about it Fables romance mechanic may lack the same depth as its predecessor, so it will be interesting to see how the developer tackles the challenge.
You can marry, it will be a bit of work, but you can marry them all. You can have kids with them, you can hire them, you can fire them, they're just great fun.
Romance stories have always been important to RPG players, probably more so as games have given them more care and attention. There are tons of examples of great RPG romances, including the likes of Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 in recent years. The concern is that games that have gone with quantity over quality have often fallen flat, as can be seen in a game that Skyrimwhere the sheer amount of romance options makes any real depth difficult.
Following Fables appearance at the Xbox Developer Direct, players now have a much better idea of what to expect from the game. The exhibition confirmed the rumor that Fable coming to PlayStation 5 at launch, further breaking down the walls of exclusivity for major Xbox properties. With a fall 2026 release window now cemented, the wait for the release is on Fable.
