2XKO's long-awaited console release is almost upon us, allowing those on PlayStation and Xbox to throw down a select few League of Legends characters in what's shaping up to be a pretty neat fighting game. Not only does it look great, but developer Riot Games also promises updates and character additions at a faster rate than its biggest competitors.
It has a lot to do, but the most important thing is how it plays. For the most part, impressions so far have been positive, but not everyone is happy with the game's balance patch that comes with Season 1. To put it bluntly, there are some fighting game pros out there who seem to think that Riot doesn't really know what it's doing, especially with some of the game's more powerful characters.
2XKO players are not happy with Braum and Warwick Buffs
Of course, there are good things about Season 1's balance sheets. For starters, characters that are considered top tier, such as Yasuo, Ahri, and Ekko, will all be slightly slower. Most of the unrest actually comes from certain characters being buffed, the first being Braum.
“Humanoids are definitely easier, let's be real about it”: 2XKO's executive producer on how they decided the game's first roster
However, no champion is “off the table” when it comes to future roster additions.
While many other characters have been slowed down, it seems that the same is not true of Braum. Not only is the blaster faster, but his command grip hits harder, and his shield special has improved dramatically. Braum has been buffed to the point where you have pros like Diaphone declaring him a big winner in the patch, while full-time FGC pro Leffen has said that people who are already good with Braum can become “Thanos”.
Warwick is another character getting buffed that also scares the game's community. He was considered quite strong before Season 1's patch, but he will now receive stability improvements, making his combos more consistent, and some of his strongest tools will be stronger as well. If you're wondering how creepy that makes Warwick, the changes made Diaphone cry “oh no” when he read them, while Leffen called them “f***ing crazy”. You know you've reached a point of balance when you have people crying out of fear.
There are other points of contention as well, like Vi and Jinx both getting massive buffs. Jinx gets her kit boosted significantly, but major system changes to how projectiles work could render them completely useless and leave her in a worse state. Meanwhile, Vi is in the same camp as Warwick, having been buffed while already being considered strong.
Of course, you can only glean so much from patch notes, and fighting game fans can go a little overboard when it comes to balance fixes, but as someone who waited for the console release to drop before jumping in, the initial responses are a little worrying. I don't like my chances with my Teemo/Jinx team right now.
