RPG game with better character customization than Cyberpunk 2077

Who doesn't love a good character creator and tons of customization in their RPGs? It's practically a requirement for the genre to have so many cool hairstyles, flashy tattoos, and perks and traits that define what kind of character you'll be once you enter the world. One of the finest examples in recent years is Cyberpunk 2077which goes pretty deep into its creators, including some NSFW stuff and even the length and color of your manicure. That said, it's not the deepest or biggest character creator out there, believe it or not.

I've chosen the following games to have more options, controls, and details in their character customization than ever Cyberpunk 2077. Some of them just have a little more variety, while others also have cool features like traits and controls that add a little more flavor to the game. Obviously, there is no telling Cyberpunk 2077 character creation is badjust that there are more expansive systems out there that let you pretty much create yourself into a virtual world, or something close to it.

Starfield

Regardless of what you think of the general game StarfieldI think we can all agree that the character creation in this game was not one of the weak points. Previous, Fallout 4 in my opinion had one of the best and most comprehensive creation tools. Graphically it was before Skyrimwhich already had some pretty nice options.

Starfield combines everything from Bethesda's previous creators into one, and the result is a very in-depth system with tons of controls that allow you to be as precise as possible when designing your character's face. Not only that, but choosing the traits was also a fun feature when you didn't have access to race bonuses like in Skyrim. Some of them give you some additional gameplay options, others are just tasters, but overall I felt they had a much bigger impact on direct gameplay than Cyberpunk 2077 life paths.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Even if Dragon Age: Inquisition is a bit more limited than some of the other entries on this list, I'd argue it still tops it Cyberpunk for the simple fact that you actually have a bit more leeway with how you shape your character's face, thanks to an abundance of sliders. There are a lot more moving parts, and with being able to choose details like inner and outer iris colors, you can get pretty deep and nitpicky.

Sure, you don't have as many wild options as you would in a game like Cyberpunkbut it's arguably one of the deepest fantasy RPG character creators, barring maybe Dragon's Dogma 2 and Fire Ring (but we'll get to those), topping, in my opinion, even Baldur's Gate 3which locks you into face presets. One thing to note is that you have some limitations on your choice, so choose carefully.

Fire Ring

From stats to appearances, everything is detailed

Fire Ring is another character customization system that absolutely blew my mind with how deep you could go. Everyone remembers seeing those terrible creations that people made when the game first came out. It has an amazing range of sliders and cosmetic options like hairstyles, scars, blemishes and such. Honestly, it's a shame that your face will probably be hidden for most of your run by a helmet or hood.

You also have the full color palette at your fingertips and can pretty much make some of the wildest known creatures imaginable that are still humanoid. The starting classes, or rather the starting stat options, are also quite broad, and you have a lot of flexibility in how you ultimately build and customize your character once the game starts and you gain access to better equipment, Ashes of War, summons and all that jazz.

Nioh 2

Presets Galore will likely follow into Nioh 3

Nioh 2 doesn't skimp on his character creator either. It's an action RPG and Soulslike that lets you go surprisingly deep into your character's appearance with tons of detailed controls for your face alone. There's also posture, pitch, height and color wheels to really spice up your character's eyes and hair, and speaking of hairstyles, lots of really pretty options.

With Nioh 3 on the horizon of 2026, I hope that the quality and depth of character creation will remain the same, and that you can make your character just as hideous or beautiful as you want before sending them out to die over and over against the game's challenging bosses.

Black Desert Online

One of the deepest character creation systems in any game

Jumping into the MMORPG side of the RPG, there is Black Desert Onlinewhich is quite famous for its incredibly deep and visually stunning character customization options. It has that distinct aesthetic that you can also find in games like Lost sheet and Where winds meetwhere characters are very airbrushed and doll-like, but can be customized to death with the huge slider options, makeup, hairstyles, color options and everything in between.

Without citing any specific sources, Black Desert Online may have the most sliders available in any face-only game, except maybe for The Sims 4 or inZOIwhich is impressive for an MMORPG. The only limitation you'll run into is your class choice, as classes are gender-locked, and some classes have specific customization options locked behind them, but overall, this is as good as creative freedom gets, and it just looks gorgeous.

Code Vein

Amazing anime style customization with an emphasis on fashion

So, just like Nioh 2, Code Vein also gets a new game in early 2026 in the form of Code Vein 2and one hopes they include the first game's insanely awesome character creator in it. This game goes for full-on maximalism with its art style, which also directly translates to character creation. You don't just choose your hairstyle and eye color, oh no, you go so far as to dress up your character in some of the coolest streetwear possible. You accessorize, style them, add some face paint and makeup, and it's almost a mini-game of its own. Definitely a big hurdle that you're probably going to have to go through if you ever really want to, you know, play the game.

Now you're a bit more limited in terms of your face shape, but that's not really a problem given how you can style the different parts of your character's hair and edit their accessories and makeup. It makes a huge difference, even when you're forced to choose a preset. The clothes are made up of different parts, so mixing and matching is a big deal here and will help you make exactly the kind of main character you've been dreaming of. For anyone who loves the polished anime look, this game's character creation is worth its weight in gold.

Dragon's Dogma 2

A game with absolute freedom in shaping faces and bodies

Well, if it's a game that peaks of the Inquisition cosmetic customization depth in the fantasy RPG realm, it would be Dragon's Dogma 2. The creator reminds me a bit of the quality and detail we also see in it Nioh 2 and Fire Ringbut, and maybe this is just a me thing, it feels like the characters in Dragon's Dogma 2 looks a little less spooky than they do in Fire Ringfor example. Of course, that has its own drawbacks for some creators.

It's amazing how much you can customize the look of your character in this game, and all the options just look incredibly good and polished. One of the things I really appreciate about this system is the fact that it separates the lower body and upper body, which means you can create more versatile, unbalanced bodies that are a bit more realistic and unique. Every aspect of your character is modified with a slider, which is always good news, as it gives you a lot more freedom than just choosing from a list of presets. There are tons of great hairstyles to choose from, beards, tattoos, scars and such to give your character just the right kind of vibe. Honestly, if you just like creating characters, this game might be worth it for its creator alone, although the general gameplay leaves a lot to be desired compared to titles like Fire Ring.
