Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, according to player reports from a recent conversation with game director Yoshi-P. The developer has previously been known to drop by for casual chats with the in-game community during the New Year's holiday, and did so again to celebrate 2026 in Final Fantasy 14.
Final Fantasy 14 begins its build-up to the launch of its next expansion after Dawntrail. The game has gone through a bit of a rough patch, with the reception of Dawntrail mixed among fans, repeated DDoS attacks and delays to promised updates. But the players are hopeful that the game is going in the right direction.
Yoshi-P discusses Final Fantasy 14 ending PS4 support
Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida, aka Yoshi-P, talks about the game on PS4 and explains that support for the console will eventually end.
Yoshi-P swings by to chat about the game
According to player reports from the Japanese server Pandaemonium, Yoshi-P's character logged in and visited the Costa Del Sol to answer some questions, as the new year had already started in Japan. Players got to ask questions and he picked a handful to answer, confirming some interesting things about what's next for the game. But when asked about the Switch version of Final Fantasy 14 would be released, he simply replied, “Please look forward to the Switch version,” seeming to confirm that it is happening.
A Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 has been discussed and rumored for some time, but nothing official had been confirmed before this. In 2024, Yoshi-P suggested that a version of the Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch 2 may be possible, and in 2025 he revealed that Switch 2 owners may receive good news in the future. He was quoted as saying “We are doing our best to ensure this happens”, but asked for more time. Judging by the new announcement from the developer, it seems that the port has now been confirmed.
At the moment, players seem to have mixed reactions to the news that the MMORPG could be added to the Switch 2. Some have expressed concern that being tied to a console generation could lead to difficulties in supporting and upgrading the game in the future, as has been the case in the past with some titles, e.g. Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 14. But many have expressed excitement about being able to play the game on the go on a portable device like the Switch 2. Although Final fantasy 14 mobile exists now, it is currently not available in the West. In addition, while it is possible to play Final Fantasy 14 on a Steam Deck, it's highly likely that more players own a Switch 2, given its explosive popularity since entering the market.
What else is coming to Final Fantasy 14?
While the Switch news is exciting, it's not the only thing Yoshi-P discussed. Yoshi-P teased a lot of features being worked on, like customization options for character animations. Viera players will gain access to the existing Cloud hairstyle, an increase in glamor slots will be added after the housing update, and details of the upcoming Beastmaster job will be discussed in the next Live Letter. Furthermore, the team is considering updating the dye system, possibly making updates to character creation, and the buff limit may be increased. However, this is all subject to change, especially since it hasn't come in the form of an official statement via the usual Square Enix and FFinal Fantasy 14 channels.
In the meantime, players can check out the Heavensturn event, which began earlier on December 31 in-game. Final Fantasy 14 players can participate in a small questline to unlock a new minion and a piece of furniture for their homes, apartments, or free in-game businesses. The event runs until January 15, 2026, so there's no need to rush.
