Just three months after its release, Hollow Knight: Silk Song has sold over 7 million copies. Team Cherry probably knew Hollow Knight: Silk Song was going to be a hit, but these latest sales figures show just how popular the sequel to the original 2017 game has proven to be.
After its first trailer back in 2019, Silk song quickly became one of the most anticipated games in the industry. The game was developed by Team Cherry following the success of the original Hollow Knight. While the new Metroidvania retained many of the elements that fans loved about the first game, it also had some significant changes. Most notably, Silk song stars the Hornet, which had played a large role in the first game but was never playable. With a new character, Team Cherry introduced new movement abilities and a Crest system, which included tools to use in battle. Fortunately, many players found Silk song worth the wait, and the developer has shared some details about its sales success.
Every Award Hollow Knight: Silksong won at the Game Awards 2025
Hollow Knight Silksong was heavily represented at The Game Awards 2025, nominated for five awards, but only took home a fraction.
Hollow Knight: Silksong passes 7 million copies sold
On December 15, Team Cherry revealed in a blog post that Hollow Knight: Silk Song has sold over 7 million copies. While this number would be an incredible amount for many games, it was made even more impressive when it comes to Silk song as it has only been out for just over three months. That means it could sell another million copies in the coming year and beyond. Additionally, this sales milestone does not count those who play on Xbox Game Pass, which was noted to be in the millions. Silk song was a day-one game on the subscription service, allowing users with either the Ultimate or PC plans to dive into the Hornet's new adventure in the Kingdom of Pharloom.
While this total still sets Silk song far behind the original Hollow Knights over 15 million copies shows the popularity of Team Cherry's title and anticipation for the launch. The 2017 game is already one of the best-selling indie titles of all time, and this latest milestone suggests Silk song will also be a contender for that crown for years to come. This is made even more likely given the development team's post-launch content plans.
The Sea of Sorrow Expansion is coming to Hollow Knight: Silksong in 2026

Known as Sea of Sorrow, the DLC has a nautical theme and will include new areas, bosses and tools for players to check out. There's only a teaser trailer so far, but the developer has announced a 2026 release window and promised more details closer to launch. Unfortunately, it is unclear what part of the year it will be released, but the expansion could still drive additional sales of the game.
As Team Cherry prepares to add new content to the game, several updates have been released over the past few months to improve the existing gameplay experience. For example, a November update for Hollow Knight: Silk Song fixed problems with the Chinese translation, which had previously caused Hollow Knight: Silk Song to be reviewed bombed in some regions. Additionally, the patch fixed some bugs and other frustrating issues that players have encountered in the game, including making a change to the Multibinder to clear caterpillars on the first bind.
With Team Cherry showing no signs of slowing down, now is a great time to be one Hollow Knight: Silk Song fan. In addition to support for the new game, an updated version of Hollow Knight is being worked on for Switch 2, which will include high frame rate modes, higher resolutions and more graphical effects. Additionally, all versions of the 2017 game are being updated ahead of the release of the Switch 2 Edition.
