Hogwarts Legacy may get a single player sequel after all

Speculation surrounding the potential direction of a Hogwarts Legacy sequel continues to lead in new directions, with a new batch of job ads for Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software, the studios behind the success Harry Potter game, revealing that a new “high-quality single-player Action-Adventure RPG” is in the works. Related job ads directly linked to Harry Potter franchise and animation claims with a focus on “creature” design seem to indicate that hiring could be picking up steam for a major new project that could just be a Hogwarts Legacy continuation.

Previous job postings for Warner Bros. and Avalanche seemed to hint at it Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be an MMORPG. Several career entries requested experience with live service game models and progression reward systems while requesting familiarity with “an established fantasy IP” that spanned books and movies. Fixed Hogwarts Legacy and Harry Potter never directly named, repeated references to hallmarks of the game and franchise, combined with the undeniable critical and commercial success of the first Hogwarts Legacy the title, was reason for many to start connecting the obvious dots. But a new set of job postings may now indicate a whole new set of speculations too Hogwarts Legacy 2.

Rumor: Online Multiplayer Harry Potter game may be in development

A new rumor suggests that Hogwarts Legacy's Avalanche Software may be developing an online multiplayer game based on the Harry Potter world.

Will Hogwarts Legacy 2 be single player?

A job posting by Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software are seeking an executive producer to lead a “high-quality action-adventure role-playing game for one player,” with preferred candidates having “a passion for the source material and IP” on which the game will be based. Another listing that went up on the same day looks to fill a Brand Management & Product Marketing role specifically for “awarded PC/console titles within Harry Potter universe,” and a third career entry wants an animator with experience designing “creatures” and knowledge of “human and animal anatomy.” These requirements happen to mirror those of older job postings for the original Hogwarts Legacywith some curious overlap between more recent posts leading many to believe Hogwarts Legacy 2 may be free to play.

With these new listings now highlighting the potential for a highly requested single player sequel Hogwarts Legacyin contrast to the mixed reaction possibility of an online multiplayer sequel, speculation turns to whether Warner Bros. and Avalanche could work with several new ones Harry Potter game. If so, players who wanted more multiplayer features in the first Hogwarts Legacy would get what they've been asking for, while fans who appreciated a story-driven single-player experience could also have a new title to look forward to. Obviously, there's always the possibility that these job postings are unrelated, or, to the chagrin of fans, they might be connected but to a different fantasy IP.

That said, Warner Bros. have made it clear that they want to continue investing in the Wizarding World IP. Between the upcoming HBO TV series adaptation of Harry Potter and the recently opened Ministry of Magic lands at the Universal Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, WB is clearly showing no signs of letting up on the Wizarding World. Whether it's Avalanche Software's confirmed online multiplayer RPG or the recently revealed single-player action-adventure RPG, the Hogwarts Legacy sequels remains to be seen, but the continued job postings seem to indicate that some major IP projects are brewing at Warner Bros. Games.

Considering Hogwarts Legacy was one of the best-selling games of 2023, many would be more surprised if WB passed on a sequel rather than being shocked by several new titles during Harry Potter brand development may be on the way. The only other major IP under the Warner Bros. catalog that fits the same fantasy-story-that-spans-literature-and-film criteria would be The Lord of the Ringsbut it would serve as a reason for the company to prioritize another follow-up Hogwarts Legacy before venturing into another magical world of gaming.
