Since it was introduced in Battlefield 1Breakthrough has been the home of chaotic firefights, and it was no different when Battlefield 6 is launched. Follows though Battlefield 6s latest update that lowers the mode's player count, breakout is a little less intense than it once was, and over 1,000 players aren't happy about it.
Battlefield 6despite being a hugely successful game, has experienced its fair share of controversy. Battlefield RedSec has been bombed in reviews, players have leveled countless complaints about the game's cosmetics, and challenge-focused battle pass progression has been a consistent criticism. But perhaps is more divisive than anything else Battlefield 6s map design, as many veteran players have slammed the shooter's arenas for being cramped “meat grinders” that lack the scale that longtime fans have come to expect from the series. As Battlefield Studios works to address this issue in future seasons, lowering the number of Breakthrough players feels like a band-aid, but it's a patch that many seem to want removed.
Why Battlefield 6 fans are pushing back against the breakthrough's drop in players
In traditional breakthroughs, and the launch version of Battlefield 6 Breakthrough featured two teams of 32 for a total of 64 players in a given match. Now, however, the mode has 24 players in both teams for a total of 48 players. There are several reasons for this change, which were not mentioned in the patch notes for Battlefield 6s 1.1.1.5 update, has caught fire. The lack of chaos around every corner is just one of those reasons, as there's more breathing room on each map than there was before the update. However, community reactions indicate that reducing players doesn't make the maps feel bigger, just empty, so now players who like infantry combat are just as out of luck as those who love vehicles and traversing huge warzones.
Battlefield Studios has mentioned that the map size is “under review”, suggesting that map boundaries may be expanded or that future maps may emphasize size.
The negativity is highlighted in the above Reddit post from 1Aspect, which has over 1,200 upvotes indicating that many players agree with this user's stance that Breakthrough has become “terrible” following its sudden drop in team size. It's hardly the only post of this nature either, as other Reddit posts (1,2) have similar views and upvotes. Alongside the arguments that the mode feels too Conquest-like now, with long runs between matches being more common, all the posts tend to point to a problem that BF Studios might not have anticipated when they made the change: balancing issues.
This is because several Battlefield 6 maps will now feel nightmarish for Defenders. Liberation Peak, for example, has become painful for those defending on Breakthrough, as they have fewer teammates to help eliminate the attackers' pair of tanks in the early game. Other maps can be just as brutal, as the Defenders lack the squad size to effectively cover every flanking route. Meanwhile, attacks can be more difficult on maps like Blackwell Fields, as there aren't enough people to keep multiple zones covered. Also, fewer players means less support, making players revive much less consistently as well, adding to how unsatisfying breakthroughs can feel after the switch. Some players in the Reddit threads above have pointed to Casual Breakthrough as somewhere BF Studios could have tested such a change, as tamer Breakthrough matches would suit the intent of the mode.
While there will certainly be some people who like that breakthrough is no longer chaotic, this is what set the mode apart from the other options, and it's clear that the overall response to the change is negative. It seems like Battlefield 6 has backed itself into a corner, as not only are big map fans left frustrated, but this player count change designed to address their “meat grinder” complaints has angered players who expect to get those experiences in Breakthrough.
