Mephisto's background in Diablo 4: Ship of Hate, explained

If you're a casual fan of the Diablo series, it can be easy to get lost in the hacking and hacking, fighting your way through the infernal hordes without thinking too much about who your enemies are. However, the Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 makes knowing your enemy worthwhile, as the big bad is the most dangerous yet.

Mephisto, Lord Of Hatred, has only been the central figure one other time in all four Diablo games. The first of the Prime Evils and Lord of Hatred is a figure who poses a danger to the world of Sanctuary that cannot be easily defeated. It begs the question, just who is Mephisto and why is he so dangerous?

Where did Mephisto come from?

Mephisto has not always existed as a singular entity; he the result of the death of the great dragon Tathamet. The Tatham was the second being in existence, the sum of all darkness and the primal evil.

When Tathamet died in battle against their counterpart Anu, the first being and source of all light, his body fell into the lower darkness of reality which would become Bruning Hells.

Demons spawned from his corpse and from each of his seven heads grew a larger demon. From his three main heads came the main evils – Mephisto, Baal and Diablo. From the four smaller heads came the lesser evils – Andariel, Azmodan, Belial and Duriel.

While Mephisto is the Lord of the Hat, the other evils each have their own domains and titles. Baal is the Lord of Destruction, Diablo is the Lord of Terror, Andariel is the Maiden of Anguish, Azmodan is the Lord of Sin, Belial is the Lord of Lies, and Duriel is the Lord of Pain.

What are Prime Evils?

Prime Evils are the most powerful of all demonscommanding the forces of the burning hells and embodying the domain they are titled lords of, Hatred in the case of Mephisto.

They are entirely dedicated to the destruction of the High Heavens and the angels that dwell there, while they try corrupt the people of Sanctuary to expand their influence and increase their powers.

A first hand probe can't really be defeated. Knocking one down will only banish them for a short time until they can reform themselves. Instead, they have tried seal them inside Soulstonesbut this has only ever seen temporary success.

Prime Evils have been known to take the form of strange animals while reforming their essence. Baal takes the form of an owl with one eye, Diablo the form of a wingless bat, and Mephisto the form of a wounded wolf.

Who is Mephisto?

Mephisto is considered the eldest brother of the three Prime Evils the most intensely evil of all demon species. As the master of hatred, he prefers to operate from the shadows, pulling strings and fueling resentment.

Mephisto is sometimes also known as “Odium”. Odium is a rarely used word that refers to intense hatred of someone as a result of their actions. Mephisto bearing this title refers to all hatred coming from him specifically.

When angels or men get angry and start hating each other, they unwittingly serve Mephisto. He works to break contacts and destroy societyturn their enemies against each other to preserve their own strengths.

Mephisto has played a large role in the setting's history. He technically is the grandfather of all mankindbecause it was his daughter Lilith who created them together with the angel Inarius in a secret affair.

That was it Mephisto who was secretly Mephis, the Spirit of Loveposing as a benevolent figure to corrupt humanity. So was Mephisto who made the pact that angels and demons do not affect humanity and withdraw from Sanctuary.

The ruse of passing himself off as Mephis, the spirit of love, was one his brothers participated in. Baal pretended to be Bala, the spirit of creation, while Diablo pretended to be Dialon, the spirit of determination. Each brother posed as the embodiment of a virtue that was directly opposed to their true nature.

They formed a religion around them known as the Trinitarian. You might recognize that name as the cult that openly worships the first villains in the games, having formed directly from the false religion.

Mephisto was convinced that if both sides stopped directly interfering with people, their darker nature would eventually prevail. By playing the long game, he teased the impatient Lesser Evilswho rebelled.

This rebellion after the events of the sin war resulted in the Prime Evils banished from the Burning Hells and into the mortal realm, triggering the events that would do so lead to the beginning of the first Diablo game.

This would be known as The Dark Exile, an event that would have an impact on the world of Sanctuary like almost no other. Prime Evils were loose in the world, while the Angels stuck to their agreement not to intervene.

The manual for the original Diablo states that the Prime Evils spent “countless centuries” loose in the Sanctuary before they could be captured and that all three were buried beneath the sand. Both of these points would be connected again.

The source book, The Book of Tyrael, changes the time period the Prime Evils were loose to just a few decades. Diablo 2 changed the location of Mephisto's prison to Travincal, a jungle region.

With the Prime Evils loose in Sanctuary, they were contained by a group of sages known as the Horadrimcapture Mephisto first, but even their presence would summon demons and create conflict in the games.

What games does Mephisto appear in?

Mephisto does not appear in the original Diablohe is not even mentioned. The first Diablo game had a much more focused story, not expanding the scope of the story beyond what happened in the city of Tristram.

Diablo 2

He plays a more important role in the sequel, Diablo 2, and is the focus of Act 3 of the game. His brothers have already taken control of their human hosts and try to free Mephisto as wellwith the player character racing to stop them.

Mephisto had been imprisoned inside a soul stone and entrusted to the priests of Zakarum in the jungles of Kurast. Mephisto could extend their influence beyond the stonetwist the priesthood over generations.

The High Council of Zakarum act as enemies in Diablo 2 and can be harder to beat than Mephisto himself if you're underleveled or don't have the right gear. Mephisto is more powerful, but the Council has numbers on its side.

By the time his brothers arrived, Mephisto had done so already greatly weakened his soul stone and had full control over the high priest. His brothers let him go completely he immediately owned the high priest he had under his control.

At that point, the player character arrives and engages Mephisto in one of the game's more memorable boss fights, defeating him and sealing him back inside his soul stone.

The stone would later destroyed at Hellforge in an attempt to cast Mephisto's spirit away forever.

Diablo 3

The witch Adria had been working on a secret plan over the years, capturing the essence of Prime and Lesser Evils inside a special Black Soulstone so that they would not be completely destroyed.

She did this in service to Diablo, combining all the evils within him to make him the one and only Prime Evil. This incarnation was the final boss of Diablo 3, and once defeated was encased in the Black Soulstone again.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls

Malthael, Archangel of Wisdom, became disillusioned with his role and obsessed with mortality. He became the Angel of Death and tried to use the power of the Black Soul Stone to wipe out all demons and humanity both.

He was defeated, and the black soul stone shattered and released the spirit of Prime Evil Diablo. In time, the other evils separated from Diablo, became their own entities again, and returned to their hellish domains.

Mephisto returned to his realms out of hatredbut a small piece of him remained at Sanctuary in the form of a bloodied and wounded wolf.

Diablo 4

While the main villain in Diablo 4 is ostensibly Lilith, daughter of Mephisto who seeks to ensure that he can never turn his powers against humans again, Mephisto is the real villain behind the scenes.

He wields his influence masterfully to incite hatred among all involved in the storyincluding Lilith herself. He regularly appears to the player character and pushes them to take actions that benefit him.

Most fans don't know that Mephisto also has a son, named Lucion. He was active during the Sin War but was erased from existence by the human master Uldyssian ul-Diomed. He seems to have been completely erased and has shown no signs of reforming in the burning hells.

Lilith is defeated, and Mephisto is once again trapped inside a soul stone. Although it may seem like a bad outcome for him, the soul stone has been brought through the shrine. No evil is better at exerting its influence beyond a soulstone than Mephisto.

Diablo 4: Ships of Hate

Nyrelle, who trapped Mephisto in her Soulstone at the end of Diablo 4, carries him in her prison through the world and sails north. She means well, though Mephisto is a master manipulator.

Nyrelle hopes to find a way to banish Mephisto forever, but he psychologically tortures her every step of the way and will likely have a plan that no one but him could understand until it is too late.

Other performances

Mephisto is heavily mentioned in supplementary material to the series, in comics, novels and sourcebooks like Lorath's book. He is also mentioned in the mobile game Diablo Immortal but has a notable appearance outside of the Diablo series itself.

Mephisto is a playable character in Heroes of the Stormso you can wreak havoc on your opponents in Blizzard MOBA. He has many of the abilities shown in his boss fight in Diablo 2, but takes practice to master.

Heroes of the Storm features two other Evils as playable characters, Diablo and Azmodan. Unfortunately, Baal, Andariel, Belial and Duriel are not available and likely will not be added at this stage as new content for the game has unfortunately run out.
